I don't know anything about John Deere Commercial Mowers, but I've been thinking about buying a JD F-912. The owner says that you have put a rubber strap to keep the PTO engaged. I cannot get to look at, but I was looking at JD parts on the net. The F-912 shows a electric clutch at $570. With an electric clutch ,the PTO should be not running running or running all the time. This machine is on a online auction and don't know how to bid. Anybody familiar with these machines?

I would stay away from that type of John Deere mower and try a Scag or Exmark or another sure enough commercial quality mower. You can look at the sturdiness of the deck and other parts on the JD vs others and see that they are lighter built. I have an older Ransome Bobcat T-18 that is the same configuration as the F 912, and, even with its worn steering, would prefer the Bobcat over a JD.

My 2 cents

I have a ll45 Deere with Yanmar diesel with 7200 hrs on it with commercial 72 deck that has had one set of bearings in the deck and 3 deck belts. A couple sets of tires. I've never had an Exmark or a Scag even get close to those hours and the deere is still in excellent shape. True, it isn't as fast as a z but ya never have to work on it. And it will run on a quart of fuel per hr where the gas burners won't run on a gallon an hour. Figure the diff in fuel alone and add a couple engines for yours and tell me which is a true commercial mower.

I run F-932 gas Yanmar. The leaver is held on by an electro magnet, that is how the safety switch works with a belt drive system. With the individual wheel brakes they will turn on a dime, ride good and not too hard to work on. I would advise to buy the repair manual from Deere. The only thing I do not like about mine is it is gas and it likes lots of it, but I like running it more than the 455 that burns a tank every three weeks.

Yep, that sounds right... an electromagnet tied to the seat switch keeps the PTO engaged.

I have a Kubota f-2000 (very similar). FWD is a must if you are going to put a snow thrower on it. It comes in handy at times if you are mowing hilly ground. Mine has a mechanical pto and if you need a bungy to hold it in, sounds like that does too. As long as it doesn"t have a boat load of hours, it wouldn"t scare me. I wouldn"t trade mine for an XMark or Scags under any circumstances. Mine is a 1988 and has 1800hrs on it. I've had it for 8 years and paid $6,800 with a 60" mower, 48" snow blower and heated cab. It had 700hrs on it when I bought it.

I've had many of the F900 series machines. Before the Z-tracs came out, that's all we ran. These guys are right. The safety interlock system is pretty straightforward. Not a tough fix if you end up buying it. The F900's were great for their time, but the quality of cut is nowhere near what the 1400-1500 series of today will do. If you need sheer grass cutting production and your grounds aren't too rough, go with a zero turn.
