i have a jd rwa 8ft. pull type transport disc.i have some old thick heavy cutting edges from a end loader i was gonna cut down and put them on top the disc for a little added weight.might add up to couple hundred pounds.would this cause any concerns.just seems like a little more weight would make it cut in a little better.

A couple hundred won't hurt much. A thousand will. Hitting a big rock or stump at 7 MPH with extra weight added might bend an arbor bolt or break a blade. We just have to use a little common sense with anything we operate. Those old Deere disks weren't too strong in the area where the cylinder pushes on the axle pipe to rotate it. A little reinforcement cures it. Jim

I have a 6 ft dearborn 3 pt disk for my Jubilee. I welded vertical pipe to the pack of disk, so I could put concrete block for added weight. Kept the back section in the ground, worked well in heavy sod.

The two pull type tandem discs we used to have had rock boxes on top of each gang. Came from their respective factories that way. As we went along, we'd pick up rocks and place them in the boxes.

The extra weight will help the discs to cut better, but they will help the bearings to wear out faster! Your call!..............Sam

A grease gun twice a day is your best friend.

We had a 14 foot RW, bought new in 1958, and it had greaseless bearings the only time I've ever seen greaseless bearings on a disk. We never replaced a bearing in many years of use, but we never had a tractor on it that would pull it faster than 4 1/2 mph. Jim

I have a section of rail from a spur line chained to the top of mine. Those couple hundred extra pounds help a lot.

I have a Dearborn disc that size. When my 420 crawler was running I put 4 railroad ties on it for weight with another one chained crossways to smooth the dirt. If I was planting sudan the drill was behind with the roller behind on the end.

Now that I only have the wheel tractor I had to take all the weight off pulling the harrow alone.
