OT on line attorney

anyone used a "ask an attorney " web site for a simple legal question with satisfactory results and what site did you use ? thanks

I paid a lot of money to an attorney last year who sat like a stone Buddha watching while the opposing attorney tore into me for most of three hours over a simple cut and dried collection case. I had to settle for 50% just to get the parasite out of my life. He was an old friend of my wife and he was a lot more interested in her than in the case. Jeez what a creep. SOOOO....I am not sure you EVER get your money's worth out of an attorney. Even less so on an internet website.

There may be some that are OK, but in my experience, they are kind of like the medical and dental referral services- the good practitioners have neither the time, the need, nor the inclination to participate in them. IMHO, you'd be better off to have an office conference with someone who specializes in the field of law that's at issue.

I have friend who is a lawyer and I ask him simple questions such as the meaning of legal terms and procedures. I would not ask him for information that I should be paying a lawyer. He is not a member of the bar association in my state

I tried an online lawyer once. Got generic info and it was a waste of time and money.
You would get just as good advice using google and asking your question(s).
Still using the family lawyer.

I often get legal questions from "friends" who know I'm an Attorney. If its in an area I practice in I have no problem giving them short off the top of my head answers but if it takes a lot of time, research and study to render a competent professional legal opinion, then I tell them to make an appointment. Id guess an on line service tends to give very general very broad answers and if there's a lot at stake, you're going to have to hire a local professional anyway who specializes in the are of law you need.

Beware of Billy Bob and Bubba or your know it all brother in law (or Tractor Forums) for professional legal advice remains my best free tip........

If it is a simple legal question i think your better off just researching it and reviewing a number of past cases or examples. That way you get many opinions and even outlooks on the matter. If you want to go deeper then research case law on the subject
Its amazing what you can find on the internet including finding the necessary forms for a multitude of legal matters.

Sometimes people on forums may have gone through a very similar situation and can relate what happened with them. Brushing them off just because they aren't attorneys seems a little arrogant. In my experience some lawyers tell you what you want to hear so they can take your money. Once they have it, or figure you don't have any more for them, they could care less about you. Lawyers are kind of like Dr's, they refer to their profession as practicing law. There are some good lawyers but there is a reason why lawyers in general get a bad rap.

I agree completely. I've had the same experience as John regarding law enforcement questions. What goes in one state may not go in another. So unless it's a very generic issue your best bet is to talk to an attorney in your own state. If money is an issue, some areas have low cost legal aid for qualifying people.
