New to me tractor hauler

Drove this home after work today. Pretty solid truck for Michigan.
Tires are in great shape, trailer brakes already installed.
It does have a few minor issues, but then it is a 1979.
Thought it might be nice to haul my antique tractors behind an
"antique" truck. 300 six cylinder, four speed with creeper gear.
We won't be going far with them and obviously not fast! :)

RRLund, you might recognize this. Came from your neighborhood.

Royse, I had A 1978 F250 Ford. I just use it for my farm truck. It had 300 6cy. with 4sp std trans. It sure was A good pulling truck.

Photo did not seen.

Hammer Man, sorry you couldn't see the picture.
This one is a '79 F350 with a flat bed. Same 300/four speed.

I have a '78 F250 Extended cab Camper Special also.
It has a 400M engine with an automatic. 108K miles on it.
Its in great shape also. I hope to restore that one some day.
For now I take it to the shows as is. Brings out good memories!

Looks Good, should haul your tractors without a problem. Tires look good, does it have a gooseneck hitch hiding under that snow?

YOU HAVE A 400 M and it is still running at a 100 grad?? god that has to be a first . I had a 78 F250 4X4 with a 400 the first one went at three thousand miles and before the 12 month 12 mile warranty was out so were three more 400's along with other parts of the drive line like trans missions traction loc rear ends and a half dozen alt. When the warranty ran out and after two junk yard 400's i put a 460 in it and never looked back.

I didn't see one John, but it may have one eventually.
Most of my tractor/trailer combos weigh in at about 6K lbs.
I think it'll do just fine with that.
I've been hauling them behind my F150 with an automatic,
but it's newer and has 4 wheel disk brakes.
No substitute for trailer brakes on either though!

TV, if I run across a 460 I'd be willing to do a little swapping!
Or a 392 for that matter.
But ya, that old 400M is still purring like a kitten.
The things that make you go Hmmmm.

Stay with the 300 6 it will out pull from the get go and give you better MPG then a 460 ever will. Ya a 460 will pull it better above 50MPH but he 300 will do better below 50MPH

That's a REAL sharp old truck with some
metal in it. If you want I can sell you a
"fart" pipe to put on the exhaust and
sound cool like the kids in the little
cars lol. That old straight 6 will
probably outlast most of us(and that's
coming from a Dodge fan).

Bought this 1979 Ford truck a week ago from the original owner. It has 15,000 original miles on it and was always stored inside. Has a 351 and a 4 speed. All original including tires & paint. I'm pretty excited about it. Wish it had a hoist, though. That's Alice by the truck.

Royse, I have the twin to your 78 F250 Camper Special 400 eng with 96,xxx miles -maybe put 1,000 miles on it in the past 10 years, it sets in the shed covered & restored. Bought it in 1986 with 67,xxx.

Nice buy!

I"m liking your ride. I happen to be a vintage Ford fan. I'm also a fan of the old 300 six. Here is a short clip of my 67 F350 that we repowered. It's still a straight 6 :)

If you stick a 460 in there think about re gearing the rear end. That truck will haul a good load with 3:73's in it with the 460. I know I had a 77 geared that way with the 460. Would get between 11 and 13 MPG depending on what you were doing with it.

Quite a few guys around here had 78,79 fords with 351m's and 400. After a few of them blew up including my 400 we found out that if you use the wrong oil filter it would allow all the oil to drain back into the pan when you turned the truck off. The correct oil filter has a check valve in it so there is oil left up top at start up. I can't remember what brand the correct one is, that was almost 30 years ago. It did cure the blowing up issue.

This post has not made me feel any younger.

Royse you need to stop it right now. That pic just brought back a million memories of high school. My best friend had the exact same truck to drive to school. His dads theory was it didn't have enough guts the break it's self. As for your pick up I grew up in the backseat of that era truck. Seat fliped down parents had a mattress made to fit and over the seat I went with a pile of toys to shut me up. I would like to find a 78/79 250 camper special 4x4 one day and live the old times.

I had a quick flash of dejavu as soon as the picture popped up,but I can't figure out who it belonged to.

Nice truck, 300's are all i run. I consider it the
best engine Ford ever made. Starting to have
trouble finding them around here.

I'm a big fan of the Ford 300 cu. inch 6 and the 292 Chevy and they both pull well. They will give better MPG than the 460 but neither will out pull the 460 unless there's something with the 460!

Off the line a straight 6 will in fact have more pull then a V-8 due to the fact the 6 has max torque just above idle but the V-* has to be spinning up around 3500RPM for max torque so off the line the 6 if by far better for pulling. Sorry raced way to many V-8 with 6s and left the in the dust

That's a great looking rig! It's been a long time since I've seen a '73-'79 that wasn't rust from the glass down.
The 300 is an excellent engine. There are aftermarket parts that will wake it up. Shoot me an email if you want info on what you can do to it.

I had a '78 with a 351M. It wouldn't win any races or fuel economy awards but it was reliable as could be until the rear main seal went out at 140K. I swapped a junkyard 400 that I got for $40 and finally sold the truck when it was pushing 200K. The guy that bought it ran it up to 235K before he sold it at auction. The truck still looked great, the auctioneer sold it as original (35K)miles!

Dad had a 400 a few years later. It too was a good reliable engine. IIRC he retired that truck at 189K.

We've had some 240/300 sixes. A few things to be aware of...
watch your belt tension. Too much tension will cause the bearing to go in the water pump. Even with proper tension they went through water pumps rather quickly.
There is a drain hole or holes in the base of the fuel pump. The hole(s) are there to drain gas if the diaphragm in the pump leaks. If (when) those holes become plugged and the diaphragm leaks the gas will run into the crankcase and dilute the oil.

Kinda funny, just this morning I was thinking it would be nice to find a '67-'72 or '73-'79 F250 then I saw this topic.

Pops1532, I am the occasionally proud owner (when
it will climb hills) of a 67 F-100, 240 engine and
3 speed on the tree with 35,000 original miles. I
knew the little old lady original owner. You
suggested that there might be something done to
wake it up? It is bone stock except for newer
wheels and tires, I put the original wheels and
tires in the shed. I would like to climb hills
with the rest of the traffic, any advice would be
welcome.

From a Chilton manual:89/90 model year 300 six w/EFI- 145 HP@3400 RPM,265 lb.ft. torque@2000 RPM.Way above 675 RPM idle.(man. X/mis)
460 V8 w/EFI-230 HP @3600 RPM,390 lb.ft. @2000 RPM.Idle RPM 775(man. X/mis)
"No replacement for displacement".Good as that 300 six is it just can't out pull the 460 PROVIDED the the gearing is close and the load is close as well. Some guy on another board was raveing about how he raced his ford P/U against a Mustang and beat him.All I could say was you might have been raceing he wasen't.

That's where I saw it! I was over to Burkholder's just a half mile north of there to talk to him about seed corn a few weeks ago.
