things to ponder

if I'am teaching a grandson how to cast a fishing pole with nothing more than a weight on for better casting(no hook)-- can the game warden give me a ticket for fishing without a license? just wondering -- he would likely give me one for being a smart ars LOL

probably give you the fine , then search your house with out needing a warrant , take ya to jail for having some kind of store bought fish in your freezer he claims is wild game , and once you get released ,you have no recourse for wrongfull arrest , just a big layer bill. LOL

For what it"s worth, a friend of mine asked a warden if he could practice fly casting if the fly didn"t have a proper hook. Answer was yes, just cut it off at the barb.

I went with him to the lake to watch the fun; sure enough after about 15 minutes another warden stepped out of the bushes. We politely showed him the disabled fly and gave the name of the warden who said it would be okay. He chatted with us for a few more minutes and left, no problem.

As bad as it is getting one can not so much as fart with out something happening. So as yes since now days the law/cop can do as they want when they want. Like today Cop car at a light turning left had no signal if I did that I would get a ticket him well you know he broke the law but what can you do

MNDNR for years tried telling everyone that a game warden can just walk in and check your freezer. Not true. The same laws that apply to cops apply to game wardens. In MN all game wardens are also cops so they can bust you for other stuff. In the late 90's using the "can walk in any time" they busted a couple of guys in my county who were smoking a little weed while they were ice fishing. Game warden just opened the door to their ice house and walked in. They had money enough to fight it and won. Judge ruled the evidence as inadmissible because it violated the protections granted by the constitution/amendments of unreasonable search and seizure.

So basically the game wardens have to follow the same guidelines that cops do.

As far as teaching the kids to cast make darn sure that you have no other gear there with hooks and you should be fine.

Why not just do it like my dad did and tie a nut onto the line and have me cast in the side yard? Learned spin casting, baitcasting and fly casting that way. If you're on the water, I'd be fishing!

depends on where you live
In NY, if your line touches the water, I'd have a license.
Some wardens apply hunting rules to fishing too.
hunting wording includes 'pursue' 'disturb' wildlife
if a fish reacts to the weight or tries to take it = disturbed
I've had wardens ask to see my fishing license when I was launching a boat, with the poles still in the truck with nothing attached to the line.

A man was stopped by a game-warden in Northern Algonquin Park recently with two buckets of fish leaving a lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?" The man replied to the game warden, "No, sir. These are my pet fish." "Pet fish?!" the warden replied. "Yes, sir. Every night I take these here fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I whistle and they jump back into their buckets, and I take em home." "That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that!" The man looked at the game warden for a moment, and then said, "Here, I'll show you. It really works." "O.K. I've GOT to see this!" The game warden was curious. The man poured the fish in to the river and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, "Well?" "Well, what?" the man responded. "When are you going to call them back?" the game warden prompted. "Call who back?" the man asked. "The FISH." "What fish?" the man asked.

IN NY I don't believe you even need a license until you're 16 yoa. The granddad doesn't need a license unless HE'S fishing. That much I know for sure.

I remember that when my parents bought us kids fishing poles (late '60s or early '70s) the poles came with plastic covered weights for practicing casting in the yard. Cheap little poles, probably Zebco, but perfect for kids drowning worms.
