)T--Hearing Aid

I did not find good info with search engine.
I have a moderate hearing loss from years of working in noisy work places--and running tractor and other engines without proper muffler!
Anyway--My greatest problem is with people communication.
I have talked to hearing specialist and most recommended a hearing aid but they are ridiculously priced, as some of you are aware.
Why would a hearing aid cost upwards of $2K??--the same reason eyeglasses cost so much!!
Been thinking about some of the more realistically priced at less then $300.00 and some--like from Amazon, for $80.00.

I too have hearing problems but the V.A. provides me with my hearing aids due to loud noise on ships etc. I can not wear them when I am running machines so only wear them when going places that I have to talk to people a lot. To tell the truth I do not like them but you got to do what you got to do

I don't have any first hand experience with them, (although
that day may be coming), but my understanding is the
higher quality ones are more selective, only amplifying
desired sounds. The cheap ones amplify EVERYTHING, and
drive you crazy.

Good Evening Jiles

The first pair that I had fit inside the ear , I hated them , The ear canal would sweat causing the Ear wax to flow & plug up the hearing aids.
Last pair that I bought were the kind that fit behind the ear & a tube went from the hearing aid to the dome piece that fits inside the ear. Mine cost Right at 1500.00 each . but I am very happy with them .
I worked on Jets for 20 &1/2 years in the Service . Then started working on Small Engines & Chain Saws , & anything that made a noise.

I do not believe you will be happy with a cheap/resonably priced hearing aid. The trend is programable hearing aids, tuned in to the decilbles(sp)that you are not picking up. Glenn is correct, lower priced non-programable HA's just amplify everything, so while you may hear your wifes voice just fine, a mans voice will be overwhelming. Mine were high priced 4+ years ago and I still have problems with young children and some womens voices.Just my experience. gobble

It's not right laughing but!!!!!
A man was telling his neighbour, 'I just bought a new hearing aid.
It cost me four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art.. It's
perfect.'
'Really,' answered the neighbour . 'What kind is it?'
' Twelve thirty..'

I can laugh at that!

(quoted from post at 01:48:48 02/14/14) How about that ringing in your ears, does a hearing aid do anything for that?
Thankfully, I have only low ringing in my ears. But, if hearing aids made it louder, it would be a problem.

It helps some but pretty much one of those thing you learn to live with and yep I have noise 24/7 or seem that way even if there is no noise there

You aren't by chance a member of the American Legion, or eligible, are you?

They have a great program for hearing aids for members and spouses. When my wife needed hearing aids a couple of years ago, we used an AL participating provider. The aids outright would have been $7400. With the AL discount, they were $4300.

I decided the $40 per year membership fee is a good investment.

Jiles,

My hearing is pretty bad, according to some.

I can hear high and low just fine, but just LOUD or especially LOW voices I'm only guessing and wrong most of the time.

Some people are inconsiderate or just don't know to talk normal if you wear a HA, and if you say what they yell.

I got mine through the Ontario Workman's Compensation, just made it for their hearing loss limit.
They paid the whole shot 2 HA's, 3 settings, remote, batteries, cleaners, picks, ear kit, test every year and new supplies.
The most they would pay was $4,000 if I paid it was $7,000 for the same set and $3-400.00 for the yearly tests and supplies.

- lots of markup, just like, glasses costs $20.00 to make charge $2-300.00

Hi, I"m hearing impaired and its called nerve deafness. I"m 76 years old and have worn hearing aids since 1983. Here"s the skinny on hearing aids. When you are tested the audiologist will complete a chart on what frequencies you are deficient in. They have hearing aids that break the sound into 8 to 16 parts (meaning frequencies), amplify the ones you are deficient in and and put the sound back together and into your ear. The larger the hearing aid, the greater the capacity to rebuild the sound. Behind the ear is generally capable of more than the shell, the in the ear or the completely in the canal. The down side of the behind the ear is it can come off in physical activity. Those that fit in the ear are less likely to fall out. But, in the ear fittings are critical. If its not comfortable in your ear, you won"t wear it and you"ve wasted your money.

There are many good brands out there. Phonak is certainly one.

You should get a 30 day trial period with the purchase. Be honest with yourself, if it doesn"t feel right or you"re not hearing what you think you should, take it back.

You know how the VA is got to ask 3 different doctors to get help. Ask to see a nuerologest (sp) they seem to know about tinninist.

I can't hear thunder anymore, especially people talking or when there is background noise.

I didn't trust the hearing aid businesses.

I had my doctor set me up with an actual audiologist at the local hospital. They gave me a very thorough testing and diagnosed me with "farmers ear"

They told me hearing aids would not help me as it would just amplify the background noise.

So 4 years later I am not much worse, but at least not broke paying for hearing aids that wouldn't have helped me.

Ya you ask for an appointment and you get one 6 months later and by then your dead or what ever was wrong has gone away. Same thing is going to happen with this affordable health care act. Ya like a person can afford it. My wife checked and it would cost her $500 per month which as about 1/3 or our total income for the month well to tell the truth more like 1/3 plus another 1/5

I to have HA from the VA thanks to Viet Nam, any way I waited too long before I got them, wouldn't be with be without them. Does not amplify tinnitus and I have the great fortune of hearing my grand kids. (My wife says I still have selective hearing though) Get the good ones and make sure they fit.
