discmower users

for you guys who use discmowers do you put your hydraulic cutterbar cylinder in the float position.i got a nh hm235 this fall and the manual says to use it this way.if so i will have to figure how to get my tractor hyd. valve in that position.

I have a 1 way cylinder too, and let it down till it touches, then a little more. If you have the springs adjusted right, it will cut just right. On occasion mine will creep up and the stubble gets ragged, then tedding does not go well there, plus baler will pull up the uncut stalks. So, keep it down.

Single way rams in my JD1360, just full down with the single acting spool and hold it for a bit to let the oil drain a some. Seems to work for me, but I can see how the float position would be good......Sam

what kind of tractor do you have?

most tractors, you just push the hydraulic lever down and then a little further and it detents to a float position.

My IH disc mower has position on the mower linkage that lets the bar float and follow the uneven ground. Lower the cylinder all the way down and forget.

Every mower that I have ever used rides on it's shoes, and when I push the lever ahead to lower it, as soon as the cylinders have retracted all the way the lever pops back to center and is right there in position to easily grab to lift again.

i have a t4020 newholland.the manual says to push
the lever forward then a little further and then it
is in the float mode;guess i will just have to
experiment with it.

I mow with an HM235...so probably model specific help to you.

Manual says use "float"

I don't use it.

I just leave my remote valve in neutral. If I leave it in float I find the end of the cutter bar has more weight on it and more apt to "kick back" Bar "floats" better in neutral. (Yes I have the hitch set correctly)

I simply lower the cutter bar using the remote valve (using float position for single acting use on the 495) and when the bar is down, pull the lever to neutral. I raise the bar manually and drop it manually if required for uneven terrain. Can mow faster that way.

If I wanted to mow about 3MPH I could leave it in float.

I normally mow 5 MPH no issue.

My mowing doesn't look like bad haircut either....

well i thank all of you for your replys, sounds like a 50/50 split to me.guess i will try it both ways and see what works best for me.
