This is the plaque on the early roto-baler at Pioneer Village. A/C bought the patent for it in 1939.

Very interesting. Thank you for posting. I had heard one time that the straight through baler design that Hesston used, I think in the 1970s, was one that they got the patent rights from Minneapolis Moline on their model 760 balers.

thanks for the pic. im just wondering how they fed that machine it looks to me one slip and you can get wrapped up in your work!

Upper Midwest AC club, headquartered in Hutchinson, MN, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Luebben/AC Roto-Baler just a couple of years ago.

Wonderful displays of early versions, plus development history in their club magazine during the year. You can access those issues on their website...(google Upper Midwest AC Club)..includes a story by my local Padre- his experiences in running his Dad"s Roto-Baler. Also....my Dad"s HM bale loader, and others.

Very interesting history of the round baler....and what it turned into today.

That place has a lot of stuff. I suggest to anyone traveling I-80 to take a spare day and drive the extra 25 or so mile round-trip to drop down to Minden and see it.
By the looks of the Luebben baler this plaque is on, they didn't make any changes to it besides the name on it.

When I was a kid here in central Missouri in the '60s every farmer used a little round baler and everyone had problems. It was commonly told that the inventor had mental problems and eventually was institutionalized. Is that true or was it just an idea that anyone who made such a contraption had to be a little nuts?

My dad and grandfather used the AC Roto balers for years and I still have one I use sometimes. It'll put up better quality hay than the average square baler because it doesn't beat the leaves off. Also in its era it was a much more reliable baler than the square back then as those older square balers always had tying problems. They took some getting used to but with a WD Allis tractor one of those would bale more hay per hour than a JD 14T even with the stopping to make a bale as it would take a lot of hay.Handling the bales were no problem if the wagon had standards front and rear and the person handling the bales had hayhooks to handle the bales.in the barn the hay could be rolled across the barn floor from the wagon to the person stacking. To this day I'd much
rather handle Roto bales than the square ones.

I agree with T, but you"d better get there when they open an plan to spend the whole day, there is so much to see and interesting. The wife will enjoy this as well since there are a lot of household things as well as farm stuff.
