Ok, this is weird, mid january rain?

How many recall that rain in mid winter was just completely out of place ? Those in cold climates LOL ! We have had 2 significant snow falls now, both were gone in the days after, not complaining, but its raining again, not pushing the global warming thing, and do realize patterns of certain types of weather exist, that and where we are, theres always tropical air coming in up the coast that meets with cold fronts, causing most typical weather events. Or.. I'm just miffed cause I can't work outside today LOL !

Then rewind to the winter of 2010-2011, which was like what I recall from the 70's, and caused a whole bunch of extra work to be done, I'll take the rain LOL !

We're just too sensitive to weather extremes because they're pushed so hard by the media. But,yea, rain in January,no big deal. Pretty unusual to have a year when we don't have a January thaw.

Right, I remember how unique the January thaw used to be, thawing from sub freezing temps, but not any more LOL !

The media and weather, bad combination, too much hype when theres a snow storm coming, empty store shelves etc.

rrlund i agree with the whole media thing pushed by some political propaganda no doubt (gore) but i remember growing up (cold Climate ohio) playing around in pools of standing water in mid january its not uncommon just like you said the media has intensified it so much

this winter is driving my logger nuts. At first it was too wet and muddy, then it got cold and snowy and things going good for a few days--then rain and then deep freeze and he couldn't get up the mountain on the iced over trails.--now wet and muddy again and can't get up!

The Weather is probably hyped more then in years past but at least in my neck of the woods the winter cycle is really gone to an extreme.

If it's not 0F it's 40F, if it's not snowing it's raining.

As far as I can tell we went almost all winter last year with out a sunny day that was in the mid 20s. This winter is shaping up to be the same.

I want to work on my firewood desperately. First snow, then an ice storm now everything is going soft and muddy on me. I did get some out on Sunday but I couldn't pull the logs all the way up to where I want to buck them up due to mud.

I can deal with snow, I like snow for what it's worth. Ice and mud on the other hand...

Looking at the long rang it's not suppose to cool down here until the weekend and even then it's not getting real cold, more upper 20s low 30s type stuff.

I find it hard to believe that a fool like Gore gets even the slightest credibility. He should have faded into obscurity long ago - along with the "gate" suffix on every new scandal that comes along. {{{{sigh}}}}}

We've had a January thaw for as long as I can remember. If anything has changed it seems the whole winter cycle is slightly later than it used to be.
No scientific data. Just the way it seems to me.

I don't know what it is, but I don't like it. We have been saturated here since last May. I can complain about the temperature and precipitation type as well as anyone. But if we could just get less precip. and some SUN, it would help all of our attitudes I'm sure. We get even a moderate amount of precip. and we're floating again. I've never seen the ground so saturated.

Yep,we've been taught to confuse "average" with "normal". The average is just midway between either end of the extremes. Normal is probably more likely to be one extreme or the other.

Weather down here usually breaks in the latter part of January to the point where you can get the cultivators out and prepare for the spring planting. February usually is a rough month. We are just now drying out from the ice and snow plus several 1/2 to 1" rains through Dec, early Jan. Field still has water standing in terraces. We are up for 10 days of sunshine so it looks like it will be a normal year to get the fields ready.

Last couple of years, December has been the bad boy and the remainder of winter was somewhat mild.
