Yup--probably not the best time to go on a joyride across Tug Hill, unless you're on a snowmobile, and even then it's iffy. It's never good when they just say "more than 2 feet", and that's what our forecast says for tonight and again for tomorrow, with below-zero temperatures coming right behind it. Four feet or more of wet snow that then freezes in is going to be real hard on equipment for the few people foolish enough to wait until the storm is over to plow!

I asked the wife if she thought she should tie a rope around my waist this morning before I went out to do chores. The media made it sound like the end of the world. I was amazed there wasn't a reporter standing outside my door to report it when I let the cat out this morning.
Somehow it didn't seem like such a big deal after I got out there. Sure not the worst day ever. Guess if I was younger and hadn't had cattle all my life.........

Yesterday,Sunday at this time in central NY we had about 14 inches of snow on the ground and about freezing temps. Overnight it went up to about 42 and rained. Only snow left is where the plows and the wind piled it up. 9:45 am now and it's back to 32 and beginning to snow again.

Go to Wikipedia & see the article on "Sun dog", first photo is of a beautiful ground level TRIPLE sun dogs in Fargo, North Dakota.

Just got back from town. Very few people out today here in NE IL. Roads and highways are snow covered and slick but there were no significant drifts. Currently -14 with a -41 wind chill. Supposed to get all the way up to -11 today.

Down were I am 30 miles northwest of Albany, we had 14" of snow last Thursday, and very cold, wake up this morning and it was pouring out, temp is 41*, then temp is going to drop, to single digits! It's going to be a ice skating rink out there. I'm glad I have alot of ashes! I hate this up and down weather.

-16* here with wind chiles at -39*. My road was just plowed this morning at 9am it has been closed for over a day. It took the snow plow about a half hour just to do the snow to the next house about a mile. With the 5-6 foot drifts he had to keep backing up and do hole shoots. Midwest IL.

From SE MN. When I got up this morning the thermometer said -24F and the windchill according to the fancy weather station dohicky I received for Christmas said -40F. I know that there will be others farther north that have colder but once it gets below 0 it's just plain cold. The Governor even decided on Fri that it was to cold for the little kiddies to go to school today. I think it was in Feb of 96 when that happened last time, memory is a little foggy but i think the air temp was closer to -35 that day for us.

-20 with a wind right now, but no snow, a week ago Friday I fired up my diesel with the blower on and cleaned up, the yard was getting pretty small and it got up to 44 that afternoon and nailed every thing down, we haven't had any thing but a little dust since then and nothing for this week but cold. There is about 15 inches out in the field, about 28 inches for the winter total, and just that one two day thaw to settle it, so not too bad.

(quoted from post at 08:23:50 01/06/14) It was on the news this AM that Lake Superior is frozen over. No more lake effect snow.

Haha, as of yesterday very little other than some of the bays around the shore were frozen. Still 99% open water.

Minus 26 when I got up this morning, and a brutal west wind too. My face went numb just from the barn to house, about 300 feet.

anybody heard of house barns maybe not such a bad idea today had one on tv i think there was a garage between the house and barn and it wasnt bad in the house.come to think of it my sister had 7 cats in her house so it couldnt be any worse

No ether in the intake. Last time for that one. I don't typically use ether, but have it on hand if need a small, quick shot. Its -8 degrees here and the Deere that I was going to use to reback blade after drifted in from last night. Too cold to fire even after using the glow plug a few times. And that might have been the secret, the glow plug. A small shot of ether into the air cleaner, hit the glow plug again, heard a pop and then was literally breathing fire out the air cleaner even before hitting the starter. Its amazing how fast you can rip open an air cleaner and smother the inlet with a leather glove at -8 in the barn. Noooo moooore ether. No more, at least not with a glow plug assist. I may be slow, but learn eventually. That really truly was a stupid thing to do.

11 am cst weather bug says still - 21 -46 wind chill.
tall kid is an underground locator. he finds gas lines, phone cables, electric lines all buried.
about 630am he got an emergency out.
Galena Il. has a broken water main so tall kid being guy on call this week got the call. guy he talked to from Galena said we have to get this fixed we have a foot of ice on the street.
when i gave the cows hay this am i had -10 in the barn.

Sounds like the news is wrong again. I was wondering how it could freeze with all that wind unless it got quiet up there.

Memories of fire in the intake manifold. Back in the days of point ignition & carburetors, I helped out part time running service truck on days like this. When driver had flooded the carb it would sometimes burp & flare up. We would hit starter & suck the fire into engine, start right up. One of the guys would sometimes open choke & throttle, drop in a lit match to burn off the excess. Kinda like starting fluid & match to seat the bead on a tire. Then it would start in a few cranks. Just don't let it melt the carb. They don't advise this method in mechanic school.

Get yourself one of those hot air guns. Stick it in the intake and crank. MY DB990 has no glow plugs, but I don't need ether either (punny, eh?) using the hot air gun. My $9.00 Harbor Freight hot air gun works fine for this.

What takes you to Gouverneur CH? I'm 10 miles north.

Nothing but a freakin' ice rink out there today guys. 10 degrees and a 20 mph wind with gusts to 30. Stinks.

Well, I knew that I made a mistake when I heard it pop and saw a flame in the air cleaner. Granted. Could have burned her up. Big mistake, lesson learned. But, I have to ask you about igniting ether with a glow plug when the engine isn't turning over blowing the head off. The ether obviously travelled the intake into an open cylinder, hit the glow plug, ignited right back out the lowest pressure path, then fire in the air cleaner. It seems to me, and I could be wrong, that any pressure from the igniting ether back out the least resistance has got to be much lower pressure than ignition under compression.

I know, using ether isn't ideal. I don't typically. Yesterday was exceptionally cold, so as I have on a few occasions, a quick shot of ether. About a second's worth. My mistake, hot glow plug ignited it back out the intake and into the air cleaner and snout. As someone else mentioned, in the future, use a heat gun to create a preheated charge.

Have a great day, stay warm out there, work safely.
