Old photo of my Dad's first tractor

My son found this and sent it to me. It is about 1955 or 56. My Dad had just got this tractor after my uncle had it for 3 years. Uncle Bill bought it new. It is a 52 8N. That is me on the step. I was born in 52 also. I still use the tractor 2 or 3 times a week on the farm hauling wood or mowing.
Daddy had retired from the Army a few years before as a Colonel and bought a small farm here in Oakway, SC. I grew up using that tractor and brush cutter.

Nice picture and memory. Glad you still have the tractor.

We all need to remember that all the tractors, of all brands ,that we collect, where someone's Dream machine at one time. Even the ones that have turned out to be lemons over time.

Also have to think about the time period they where built in. That 8N was a BIG step up from the tractors and horse that where the other choices at the time. Compared to a more modern tractor is does not shine as much. So you just have to think about what options they would have had.

the 8n in the picture I just posted is not the one I have, he traded that one in for JD 420 ,Then he made a mistake,he traded the 420 later on for the 2010,boy was he sorry,,,

hi, nice picture, with many great memories. If the tractor could tell it's own story of the hours of work performed over the years!! These old tractors are a keep sake. I purchased an old severly beat up (48)8n a few years ago and have slowly been rebuilding. A person was in my yard and claimed the tractor belonged to his grandfather, who lived about 100 miles away. Said his grandfather never looked after his equipment, sort of fit in with prephaps it was the same tractor. Cheers, Murray

just like your first girlfriend one you will always remember.
my aunt had a ford remember the choice do i hit the brake or clutch why did they make them like that she never used pto or 3 pt only ground drive equipment

Always love the picture of dad's tractors. Wish I had my dads Ac B we grow cut flowers with.

Nice 420 Larry with slant steering. I did the same thing your dad did, but I had a JD M I traded for a JD 2010, Nice tractor but hard on the pocket keeping going. Trade back for a Jd 430 much easier to maintain and has been a good tractor for the 35 years I have owned it. We have 4 tractors here on our farm.
Think My Dad would like to have that many to work with?

I don't have one of Dad's,but this was the second tractor that was on the farm. My uncle bought a 37 Oliver 70 on steel but traded it for this one on rubber shortly after that. Dad had an F12 before he went off to WWII but sold it. He bought an Allis B when he came home followed by an 8N Ford then an Oliver 66.

Your right JD. Dad started plowing with a pair of mules. He liked to talk about the old Guys, that spent a good part of their life looking at the back end of a mule, enjoying watching the N's work.

Still have my dads 1938 JD G he and his brother purchased new in Enemclaw, Wa. He ran it around the area doing custom threshing, bucking hay, and plowing. When I was young in FFA I ran the tractor with a #5 mower doing some custom mowing. Still take it to tractor show hee in the fall. My dad always liked the old tractors in their "work Clothes" so I haven't had the heart to paint it up.

(quoted from post at 11:16:46 12/20/13) That sounds like a Ferguson, They had a brake next to the clutch
Fords had the left brake next to the clutch through 1947. Very confusing when switching back and forth on tractors. Did some damage to my truck one day because of that.
