can a MF-65 Gas engine run good & safely without a thermostat? how can I test radiator cap?

Good & safely, no it will run cold and you will end up with lots of condensation in the crank case. Unless you are located in tropics or don't run it when temperatures are below 70.
Rad cap you test with a rad cap tester, but for the price of a new cap just replace it if you suspect it is not holding the right pressure.

Any engine that is water cooled need a thermostat so that they will run hot enough to burn off condensation. If your does not have a thermostat that means some one removed it probably due to it running hot. This time of year you really do need a thermostat in one so it will run as it should

No thermostat will increase engine wear, increase sludge build up, increase fuel consumption, and foul out spark plugs sooner, as well as the condensation problem that has been pointed out. Always run a thermostat in it.

What are you trying to "save" by not running a stat ? Install a 195F and the engine will last longer and burn less fuel.

my mechanic says dont need to use thermostat when we changed leaking hose last year-ran for 1.5hrs plowing this morning & kept stalling. felt rad cap and it was cold as ice.

Your mechanic? I don't think the certificate that comes in the Cracker Jacks box qualifies someone as a mechanic. A thermostat is an important part of an engine that shouldn't be over looked. It lets the engine run at consistent proper temperature.

like all the posters say, you need one.
Especially on a/any tractor which came from the factory
with a cooling system WAY over-engineered for
such small engines.
They were designed to cool under full load all day at 90 degrees,
so under light duty, they will never warm up without a thermostat
at any outdoor temperature.

On an F-20 I believe they used a shutter system to do the job of making them run as warm as they should have. Like on my 1935 JD-B which has the shutters on it

Maybe he is hoping you will bring the engine to him for repairs. When it craps out.Thermostats are there for a reason.

My IH454 has no place for a thermostat and the owners manual doesn't mention it anywhere. It's the gas model.

replaced thermostat & used Napa self adhesive gasket & leaked without the tractor running. anyone use this & is cork the best gasket to use with permatex?
