Went hunting yesterday. Neighbors annually want to push their woods and mine. Usually the second weekend of muzzle season. So I tell them fine, but I get to stand on my place, should any come my way. They sent a couple of buddies to help me cover the area... Yup, a deer came out. First guy shoots, second guy shoots. Deer comes running toward me. Second guy had hit it. I anchored it. When we got there, about a hundred yards away, we were surprised to find an antler-less buck. First thought was a bigger than average doe, but no - was a buck with all the equipment, except the horns. Had two spots on his head where they were about 3/4 to 7/8 inch in diameter - scabbed over, indicating that he"d shed them a few days ago. Kinda seems early to shed antlers - what you say? (This is central Michigan.)

Yeah, they do. Every year. But I agree with rabbit. Seems awfully early. We got one years ago during November rifle season, had already lost one and second broke off in my hands. Was infected and we thought why the early drop.
A few years back I had seen a good sized buck with nice but very mis-matched antlers. One was pretty much normal 4 points, other was 2 points and drooped way down toward the front - very heavy. Told my hunting partners to try to get him if he showed up. Wanted to see up close. No one saw him during season, or afterward. Next summer I was brush hogging off a hay field hit something. Thunk! On next round I stopped to see what I hit. Found the distorted antler and just a few feet away, found his other antler. Dropped both in the same spot. Still got them.

Neighbors hunting club just downed a nice deer this week. The horns dropped off as he hit the ground. The rut was a week or so early here this year so I suppose the dropping of their antlers might be a bit early also. It's not uncommon in this area for a few bucks to start losing horns at the tail end of hunting season.

When deer are stressed they will shed them. Meaning if it was shot at earlier and wounded they can shed them real quick. I know one buck that my cousin shot had horns when I shot and missed it, when he shot it it dropped them. We walked the trail it ran and found both sides. This was a few years ago in PA during the last week of rifle so about this time.
If a buck suffers serious injury to a front leg it often results in grossly mismatched antlers. My son wrote a short story a few years back about using his only tag on an old warror with a bad leg. The buck had a deformed but interesting rack. Son shot him because smaller but healther bucks were giving him a bad time. Best he could figure,the crippled deer's odd way of walking looked threating.

Missouri moved their "anterless only" season up quite a bit to escape this problem. I think there will be deer here loosing their antlers soon, if not already.
Dont know if it depends on the weather or not.
May be due to global warming.
