This is followup to comments yesterday about VoAg and FFA today. Here's a shot that might look familiar to some. My Dad taught Ag 34 years, 31 in the same small school. This is a pic from our stock show in the late '50's.Only thing missing is the stub of an unlit cigar in his mouth.

Pic didn't come through- Hope you'll try again, I'd like to see it. I showed cattle in FFA in early '60's, it was a great experience.

When I was little, FFA meant a hog or cow, learning to plant, and all aspects of farm life. The local FFA Chapter now reads it all in a book because 99% of them are city kids. They have a "food plot", but they stand on the outside watching a hired farmer do everything. Wife's niece was in one chapter, 3-4 years ago. Her main concern was what to wear to the convention....

My son and daughter were both in VoAg and FFA. Went to a large suburban school in town but it had a very good teacher and program. Son raised calves for slaughter. Daughter raised lambs, goats, turkeys, and roasters for show, 6 years in 4 H and FFA. Made the sale every year. They're grown but haven't forgotten that experience. A lot depends on the teacher and the resources available to them.

I recently came across a picture of me with my best show heifer from the 50"s. A pretty horned hereford heifer, looks just like your photo.

However, it is amazing how the cattle have changed over the last 50 years. Almost no herefords left around here and the "real" farmer
next to me runs about 100 head of high quality angus heifers in the big field next to my little farm. I told him the other day that any heifer in that field was better than the Grand Champion at the county fair in my cattle showing days.

my wife's Aunt ranched out west of San Antonio and they ran nothing but polled Herfords. gentle cows and good mother's. the neighbors Beefmaster bull got in to their ranch and bred several cows. the calves were noticibly larger, in fact my son fed 2 out. She switched to a Beefmaster bull but found the resulting generations harder to handle. Maybe not everybody experience this but she did.
