Posted this on tools - but thought I'd post here too.

Can anyone give me an approximate value of this IHC tool?

Eventually we hope to find one at flea market.

Watched this one sell on ebay and it went sky-high... sold for over $152 dollars!!

Is that a realistic value???

I didn't realize those things were that valuable. I've got one just like in the picture, as well as an Eismann and an American-Bosch. Hmmm?

rustyfarmall,

That's the thing... I am unsure they actually are that valuable. I think it may be like Nebraska Kirk said - just the result of a bidding war.

There is an old IHC 50/51 UD (I think) on ebay for $99. I bought one exactly like it for $18 and have seen them sell for as little as $10. For that reason, I don't trust ebay as a price guide unless I have watched many of the same item sell - so you can catch an "average" of prices.

Sweetfeet, I found mine in a wooden box of miscellaneous tune-up tools at an auction. Apparently the guy had been in the repair business for many, many years. I bid on that box because of a couple items that were right on top. I didn't know the magneto tools were even in there, but they quickly got cleaned up and hung on a display board in my office. Turned out that the wooden box, after cleaning it up, was the box for a Childs carpenter tool set. My wife fell in love with the box. It now lives on an end table in the living room, and is used to store TV remotes, etc.

And no, I don't think any of it has enough value to even bother with trying to sell it. We'll let the kids and grandkids sort it all out one day.

rustyfarmall,

If you post photos at all... it would be fun to see the magneto tool and the wood box.

Like your wife, I love old stuff. Can be rusty or wooden, or even an old glass bottle. I have a little bit of each in our house.

I have one similar to that, my F series parts books show it as an included tool with the tractors. Can't help with the value, I found mine in a can in Grandpa's shop when we were cleaning it out. BT

Sweetfeet:
Do you have the IH wrench number??? There where several that where call magneto wrenches. Some of them just where curved open end wrenches.
Also are you wanting to use the wrench on a magneto or just collecting to match your tractors??? The reason I asked is this. In use the magneto wrench like you pictured are a pain to actually use. They where fine to carry in the tractor tool box for field adjustments if needed but in the shop angled end wrenches and a feeler gauge worked much better. IF your collecting then the wrench in the picture is newer than your old regular or F series tractors. The stamped wrenches would have been used after WWII. Actually more common in the mid to late 1950s.

I used to have some of the older cast iron and brass magneto wrenches. I am sure some of them were IH. I will have to do some searching as I do not remember where they are at right now. I know I did not sell them but I don't remember seeing them for years.

The picture is of the more common cast magneto wrench. They where for the mounting bolts/nuts. The one you have in the picture was for actually working on the internal magneto parts.

JD Seller,

Mostly, my husband just thinks it is neat and would like to find one as a treasure at a swap meet or flea market.

If the tool you posted a photo of is 12737D, we did buy one of those already.

Thanks for the info. You are always very helpful.

I don't think that is a realistic price, I think a couple of people got into a bidding war. A few months ago a piece of original Waterloo Boy literature on ebay was bid to a little over $2000. Come to find out later from the seller that the winning and runner-up bidders got into a bidding war and neither was willing to pay as much as they had bid.

Thanks, Nebraska Kirk.

Do you have any idea of approximate value?

Just wondering in case we run across one someday.
