shipping huge tires

How feasible and expensive is it to ship huge rear tires across country? What carrier? I am looking to buy some 18.4 x 34 tires, and I may have found a good deal, but they will have to be shipped 1500 miles.

Well 18.4 x 34 tires are not small tires but these are more what I thought about when talking about shipping huge tires. LOL

On your needing tires shipped. It will make a difference if you have them shipped them to your home/farm or a business. Shipping to a business is a lot cheaper. So IF you have a friend that runs a business then have the tires shipped to that business.

I have had tires(18.4 x 42) shipped from Kansas City to Dubuque and it cost about $150 per tire.

Tires carry a low class freight rate because they are not prone to damage say like a new tractor engine in a crate. Get YOUR zip code, the shippers zip code, the tire weights and go to some of the ltl trucking companies web site like Yellow freight.com or so and you can get an estimate.

I've had pairs of tires shipped in several times. 20.8-38, 23.1-26, and 18.4-38 Used Uship and was happy with the price every time. It's basically a reverse auction- run the ad for a week, and pick your shipper. Don't have to take the lowest bid, just pick who you want. A word of advise- you will have shippers make you an offer in the first day or two, but let the auction run it's course. Those early guys are just trying to nail you down before somebody else bids lower. Uship holds the money until you sign off with a code they provide. The shipper doesn't get paid until you're satisfied.

Tires without a rim are class 77.5
The trucking company will rate the haul on this class; the weight of the entire shipment including the pallet; and the lane your freight will travel. In other words a pallet going from Fla to Az will not be the same price as Az to Fla.

While you can call a LTL line direct you will most likely get a better price from a place like Unishippers or freightquote because of their deep discounts.
The quote will only cover dock to dock delivery. Anything like liftgate; limited access (farm; residential; ect) appointments; not home at time of delivery so have to re-deliver; will add big time to the cost. Sometimes the extra fees cost more than the trucking.
So dropping off or picking up at the LTL dock; or having it shipped to your (or friends) place of work is best.

Tires can ship loose if you choose saving you cost on pallet weight.

Check with the seller, he may be able to get you a discount with a frt. carrier he uses on a regular bases. Pickup at their local dock will also get you a better deal than having it delivered to your place.
