Front Tires For A Backhoe....

Hey it's Bryce. This is kind of a rant too! :) I was out doing some work with my backhoe ( Ford 4400 ) and when I tuned around in my seat to switch from backhoe to driving, I was greeted with a gyser of power steering fluid spraying in every which direction! When I got off to inspect I discovered that there was also a 2x2 with two nails in it stuck in my right front tire. Upon pulling the block off, the tire went flat, NO DUH!!! SO, my tread is almost worn off any, anyone have a tread design that they really like? I thought 3 ribs would do good, but I wasn't sure. It has truck tires on it know, bald truck tires... And it barley turns if the grass is wet because of the weight of the hoe on the back, so I need something with good traction, what do ya'll think!?! Bryce

I've got tri rib 10 ply tire on my TLB. They work good.

I have a Ford 4500 and a Ford 535 backhoes .
I been running truck tires on the front of mine for years.
I found that these did not tear up the ground and the freshly paved roads in hot weather as bad.

My 655A has heavy tires, made for the job on the front. I don't know what ply. I wouldn't put any old tractor tire on there, unless it's a very heavy one, as even these squat pretty good under a load. I grew up helping tractors to turn in the field with brakes, so it's second nature. I doubt a ribbed tire is going to help your turning much when the front is light anyhow.

Look at the bright side better front tire then rear. I also run truck tires on my backhoe they don"t dig in and tear the ground up.

Got a Case 580 Super M. I just recently changed front rubber. Personally, I prefer to go ahead and spend a little extra and get a tire designed specifically for back hoe fronts. Much heavier, much more puncture resistant sidewall construction than you'll typically find with a truck tire or even farm tires. 9 times in 10, the sidewall is where failures and damage occur on backhoe fronts. My Case hoe does have MFWD, so I use chevron tread tires, but same logic applies to 2wd TLB's.

They run michellin radials on the front of the gov't backhoes up here. Lot of road miles. Tricks folks into thinking they buy 4wd hoes which they don't.

Depends on whether you have the money to spend or not. True backhoe tires are gonna set you back some. Used truck tires can be had cheap.

Truck tires mean you'll end up with more punctures and have to change them more often, but the sweat equity saves you major money.

Backhoe tires will last longer and be more puncture resistant, but you may be eating baloney butts and stale bread for the next year.
