just got back from trip picking up a plow with goose-neck trailer. problem is when climing a grade or hill, my truck shifts down, causing the turbo to over boost (30 psi) for 3-5 seconds, it thows it into limp-mode when the wrench light comes on. check engine light scan shows turbo over boost. normally my truck is running 1950 rpms at 70 mph. when it shifts down it goes to 2500 rpms. I have learned to bypass the problem by taking it off cruise within the 3-5 seconds and keeping the truck at speed and keeping the turbo-boost at 28 or under. seems to have the power to go up the hills. if I miss catching the over-boost and the wrengh light comes, I have to pull off the highway shut the truck off and restart it to cancel limp-mode. very frustrating! anyone had this problem or have a solution, would be appreciated.

This don"t sound abnormal to me, My 2002 7500 with a cat 3126 would open the waste gate when it was hot out and put under heavy load...I think pulling a trailer, you shouldn"t be in overdrive....On flat level ground my be ok, but under any grade could be over doing it...

I would guess that your waste gate is not opening. That would create an over boost and trigger the ck engine light. That being said this situation has always been my pet peeve with automatics, a manual will lug more.

The six leaker is famous for turbo problems. It uses a variable vane turbo setup. Sometimes they can be disassembled and cleaned and repaired, and sometimes they need to be replaced.

It sounds like waste gate is sticking on turbo, I think this is a known issue that needs servicing.

Is it chipped?

the truck isn't chipped. it is stock in every way as far as I know, and ive had little trouble with the truck since I bought it with 72000 miles on it 5 years ago.

I first would like to say thank you for posting this on this site. I do to have this problem with my 6.0 diesel F250 2006 ford truck. I have taken it to the dealership they run it threw the programs and cannot find any thing wrong. They tell me it is doing what it is program to do. I only have my problem when I tow my tractors around 5000 to 7500 pounds behind my truck. Which I find is very interesting. I some how wish I had a cummings engine in it instead of a I.H engine.

(quoted from post at 13:19:14 11/19/13) Variable vane turbo sticking or bad VGT solenoid , pretty common

What he^^^ says is correct. What others say about waste gate is incorrect in light of the fact PowerStrokes don't have a waste gate. It's simple to check with right equipment. There are a few things you can do once it's corrected. #1. Vent crank case to atsmopher or through a filter before it goes into intake air. #2. Have dealer reflash pcm to latest stratigy which includes a periododic "vane exercise" at idle. #3. If you don't tow over an extended period of time and/or operate at low rpms for a couple of weeks, stand on the go pedal now and then while looking for black smoke out the exhust. #4. Illigal in all states but only certain states look for it. Delete the egr cooler.
Better get it fixed asap because overboost is one of the main reasons for blown head gaskets.

Mine did the same thing. Turbo had eaten one of the three screws that held the vane pivot ring. Also needed EGR delete and EGR cooler. It did it to me just after warrantee was up so I took it to an independent shop with a good rep. The Local dealer couldn't make other guys' run right.
