He said the truck is rare ,and was happy to talk about it,I dont know much about Dodge trucks, but it was nice hearing about them,my picture doesnt show it good, but it is a tandem tractor for a tractor trailer.

Larry, Since I am an "old timer" I do remember them. They always caught my eye with the big massive hood and obvious small pickup truck cab.

Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Bill

There used to be a fuel company here that had all Dodge tankers like that, single axels, tandems and tractor trailers. Early to mid 70's.

big horns are very rare truck. I would love to add one to collection. One sold at auction in ct. few years back went for around $50,000.00

Where are you located? If the guy has not scrapped them I know where their was two sitting a couple a years ago. Complete sitting in an old shed. One single axel and one tandum. Be glad to check on them if you are interested.

Last one of those I saw was at The Reynolds Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin, AB. I saw one other at a tractor show in Waldron, MI a number of years ago. Nort very common.

That's right...a Big Horn. Dodge used to make some tractors, conventional Low Cab Forward that went up to a C-900 Series, and a cab over that was a L-1000 series. But, their master I think, was the Big Born featured here. See if I can find some photos on line.

you're kinda right. The cab is from the late 50s Dodge trucks and they carried the design over until they quit making them.

Dodge even made a flat nose cab over in the 60's

I remember a few of them as a kid, when I did a
tour in Greece (Air Force) in the late 80's the
Hellenic Air Force had quite a few like that Semi
tractors and Busses. Later found out that Chrysler
had sold/leased tooling to a European firm to make
them and they remained in production a while after
Chrysler quit making them. Don't know that I call
it rare, unusual maybe and if it's rare only
because most of them have died. By the way there
is an old Dodge Air Force semi tractor setting in
a yard on US 41 just North of Oconto Wisconsin.

Neat truck! Unlike so many we see pictures of, this one is getting fixed up. I like the ram on the hood. The Dodge ram and the Mack bulldog are my favorites to see. They even put the ram on cars back in the day. My 1950 Wayfarer has one.

Did you happen to ask what engine and tranny it has?

Josh

I found one website which said that these trucks were built between 1973 and 1975, with a total of only 261 being produced. I don't know just when this article was written, but at the time 105 to 110 were still known to exist, but it stated that many of them had been sitting out for so long that they were beyond repair. This being the case, the man told you right. It would be a rare truck.

Cool video of a cool truck. Only Dodge we ever had when I was growing up in Indiana was a '39 pickup...worn out when we bought it, and got worse.

Are you from Indiana?

Stan

I remember seeing one years ago coming out of the local rail yard, pulling a full sized car-carrier. Loaded with... you guessed it, brandsy new Chrysler automobiles...

total production of the big horn dodge was 261 trucks, not including pre preduction units or a few assembled from parts after the official end of production , ive done some looking into those in the day they were a fairly nice ride, even if the body was a little dated, aimed at owner operators, they just wernt widly accepted by truckers as they wanted a truck made by a truck company ie peterbilt kw mack and ih. Chevy, gmc, ford and dodge were usually bought by fleets but dodge didnt make enough bighorns for that, mainly the heavy dodges were the C series and those were everywhere

as usual, what wasnt popular when new is now one of the rarest and most sought after big trucks out there,by collectors, and if you can find one, it will bring big money

And here I thought a rare Dodge truck was one that went over 50K without parts falling off and still ran  .

Hope ya know I just joking!

Rick

Should be nice when it's done. The one in the pics below is real nice.[ Nothing looks neater coming down the road at you than a Mack model B]
