And then there was one

I really wanted to have all these calves caught before the rain started, but I ended the day yesterday with two left on each side of the road.

This morning after an inch of rain, one came up the lane on the north side and I got her shut in the corral. When I started across the road to get the truck and trailer, the other one started up. He stood just outside the gate the whole time I was loading the one in the corral, but as soon as I shut the trailer gate,he walked away.

So I came across the road and unloaded that one and the last two over here were in the barn. I got the gate shut on them and moved them in where they belong. It's an awful mudhole mess out there, but at least the south side's done. I'd have almost preferred to be done on the north side first so I could have unhooked the trailer and put the truck back in the garage, but I'll take what I can get.

always fun i had one old braford that would come to the pens for range cubes but always lay her calf down under the last tree before the pen.

One or two??? Most like all of "em!

Got a few castrated sheep I want to separate from the rams and put in another pasture. Getting your hands on one or more of them is darn near impossible! If you try to herd them through the gate, be sure the rams will be going through too. Need about six high school football players with herding instincts.

It always seems that two (or more) are easier to deal with than one. One will get nutty on you.

Ya,and the last ones are always the smartest or spookiest ones of the bunch too.
That's why I didn't chase after that last one. He hasn't been chased yet,so I'll just wait for him to come in the corral thinking it's his idea.

That is what horses are for!!
How are your trailer brakes working? I put 2 complete backing plates on my 26 foot stock trailer, on Sunday. Repaired the other 2 brakes, then took off for Nevada on Tuesday morning. Went 1987 miles and had good brakes the whole way. Left Tuesday morning at 8, and was back in the house at 2 Thursday morning. 12 Longhorn cows now call Nebraska home. :)

They're still barely working. I changed the plug on the truck last week, thought I had it,but little change. Two things left, new wiring up through the trailer and a new controller.

I CAUGHT THAT LITTLE SPAWN OF THE DEVIL!!

I saw him and his mother coming up toward the corral with some other cows. I went over and rolled under the fence, hid best I could behind a gate post. The cow came in for water, the calf was close but hanging back. I figured it was now or never. I crawled through a 4 strand barbed wire fence and walked toward him slow. His mother saw me and grunted a little. The calf started toward her and she started out of the corral. VERY luckily the calf got over center of the gate and I got it shut on the both of them. I got him loaded and got him over here. The trailer's unhooked and the truck's in the garage!

Ya,I used to have an old Hereford cross across the road that would get between the calf and the corral even if I tried to drive them up the lane with the 4 wheeler. She wasn't stupid. She knew what I was doing. Even if I didn't.

Thats what i hate being out smarted by a dumb animal.last year was a sow had to call into work and tell them i won the fight but headed to er and i wonder if i had told her i was moving her in with boar she might have gone easier?

I have to have that conversation every summer with the bulls when I try to load them to put them out with the cows. You'd think they'd know where they're going, but NO!

Try it with 150 of them. I gotta set up some sort of sorting chute rig. Someones gonna get hurt bad sooner or later and I've lost lambs to crushing before.
