Open tread on growing taters commercially

Anybody out there willing to give me a paragraph or two on growing potatoes? I think the three biggest questions are (1)a conservative expected yield per acre (Red Norland and Yukon Gold),(2)what you would consider a break-even amount of acreage necessary for a one man show. Additionally, (3)what herbicides do you use for both pre and post-germination control? I have all the equipment, albeit ancient. Land is available at no cost except preparation.(mow the weeds and start plowing). Thanks for your input.

First things first, you can grow all the spuds in the world but how are you going to sell them? Most of the growers have contracts with Fri to lay or McCains. The rest sell at farmer's markets. What is your plan? That will determine cultivar.

As far as yield per acre, it really depends a lot on where you're at. Around here, you might need a few hundred acres to grow a few bushel

Thank you for your responses. They would be grown in the Delaware River valley in northeast Pa. Its a silt loam that hasn't been farmed for perhaps 40 plus years. Being very familiar with adjacent soil fertility levels, I would expect potash deficiencies as well as a lower pH - mid 5 to low 6's.

Market aim would be farmer's fairs and perhaps a couple of local (small) supermarket chains.
