Do coyotes bark like regular dogs?

Brought my SIL's dog back to her home in the dark and he was barking at what I thought sounded like another domestic dog barking back not too far into the woods. Then they broke into their clasic coyote howl that gave me the willies. I've heard them howl plenty of times (not as close as this time) but I never thought about a bark. Its getting too creepy to go out even in the yard at night unless I'm packing.

I have never heard them growl or bark like a regular dog. They have a kindof "yip" sound when they bark. Many times they will yip yip yip yip and then howl. Dogs bark to sound an alarm, coyotes don't want to bring attention to themselves unless they are calling one another. We have plenty of them around here. Barn cats and other small animals are at risk in this area (Texas panhandle/south plains).

You likely won't know they are nearby. They seldom confront a human unless rabid and your small animals will simply disappear into the night. Yep, I know, really encouraging!

Even that depends on how hungry they are.

yes some do bark like a domestic dog....here in central Virginia they are getting bad. There is one here almost every night that barks like a dog. They are extremely smart.

They bark to lure any dogs that are loose to come to them - then they kill the dog and eat it.
Common for coyotes to do that here in the desert.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in Middle Tennessee, the coyotes do not bark like dogs. They have a very high-pitched, yip, yip, yip call often followed by what sounds more like a loud, prolonged whine.

It is impossible to mistake the call of the coyotes around here with the barking of a dog.

They sure do here in Central Ks. I'm in the country with a heavy creek a couple hundred yards away with crp behind that. They yowel, howl, bark, and yip all night. I watched one the other night from my porch barking just like a dog. I would have thought for sure it was a dog if I couldnt see it. It was just before dark. Bob

My SIL has already lost two dogs to them probably exactly that way. The dog I was bringing back has fought his way out of those 2 coyote attacks so far and one day his luck will run out if he "runs out".

if they are coydogs they will confront humans. Around here they have bred with stray dogs and they loose the fear of humans and will confront you. The pure coyotes keep their distance. They adapt to each area and do what they need to survive. They will bark to get a dog to come after them, then the rest of the pack will kill it.Crafty devils.

The train whistle sets them off howling in the middle of the night. Pretty funny really . They think the train is a competing pack of coyotes.

We have quite a few 'yotes here in central Ohio, but I seldom hear them howl.
One evening last spring, I heard something that I first thought was a dog barking, but it sounded very hoarse. No neighbor has a dog that sounds like that, so might it have been a 'yote barking?

"Do coyotes bark like regular dogs?"

YES! Coyotes & Coy-dogs sound just like a domestic dog, except that they also have a Yip & an AhRoooo howl.

A few years back I had a Coy-dog for a pet. He was half Black Shepherd & half Coyote, and I named him "Wily Woofie". He was one of the best canines that I've ever owned.

Have you ever heard them do the crying baby sound. It's also used to lure prey to them. It will send shivers up your spine.

How 'bout the other way around. My brother has his 5 labs out here at the farm with me. Often, late at night, they will begin with a verse or two of barking followed by a rousing chorus of howling at the coyotes in the area. Not sure if it's normal or if they somehow learned how to howl.

ow do you "know" what it was? Did you see the parents mate? Just a guess?

CREEPY? Shivers up the spine? WHAT are you guys worrying about... Your chance of getting hit by lightning is exponentially higher than the odds of an adult in the US being attacked by a coyote.

And, yeah, I live in northern ND, and there's all sorts of coyotes around here.

I never have spent ONE second worrying that they will bother me.

'Sides, I haven't showered for a couple of days, and they probably would be offended by my smell!
The odds...?

JMOR:

Well, since I had Woofie's mother & she was a Black
Shepherd and the only other canines in my area were
Coyotes . . . then you tell me.

JF. Every night occurrence. Were o the edge of the county forest. When my son takes Jake( our German Shepard puppy) out before bed time. he goes out armed/We don't tempt fate as it were. Some folks run dogs to hunt coyotes, their hounds run the forest quite often. LOU.

She must have been a WILD *****! (Insert word that can even be said in "polite company" when it refers to a female dog.)

Western Coyotes like you have are small timid animals Eastern Coyotes are really a Eastern Red Wolf/Coyote cross according to the Wildlife people and we kill them that weigh over 60 lbs.Normally they will not attack a human but a neighbor did have one stand its ground and growl at him down at his chicken house one night, neighbor had a 12 Ga. so the episode ended quickly and not so well for the Coyote.Dogs less than then 35 lbs and house cats are part of the Coyote's diet around here plus sheep, goats and calves.

Odds? That's what bothers me. When I was younger I just missed getting hit by lightning by a few feet but the blast knocked out the hearing in my left ear and I've been "half deaf" in it ever since.
