an old farm I saw today in Hunterdon county nj,surrounded by what I like to call Mc mansions,you cant see the houses in the picture,but they are all behind it

I don't really care to see the houses, I would rather look at the barn! Just as soon live in it, too! Sadly, doesn't look like there is enough left to save, now. Too much obvious decay.
 
That picture would make an excellent picture puzzle. With the photog talent you have, you could make it a career. Great photos.
 
When I was a LOT younger, there was a dairy barn in the neiborhood with the cows and milking parlor on the ground level, with living quarters above the cows with a hay loft above ( the third floor) and in the winters of old it was warm, and not smelly, just warm.
 
I totally agree with Wolfman - that would make an excellent puzzle and that you take very interesting photos. You should see if some calendar company would be interested or do a calendar yourself....I'm sure there are plenty of us on this site that would buy.
 
Used to be common in Europe in the old days to live above the livestock.

Someone asked the resident: "What about the smell?"

The resident replied: "The livestock get used to it".
