Roofing Scam

Had some guy on my roof this morning. Said he was doing a free roof inspection for me as I requested. He had out of state plates on his truck. I didn't call anyone about my roof as I had replaced it in June of this year.
He said roof was shot. He said he could replace it for $20K if I sign the contract today, special deal. If I paid 1/2 down he could have his crew there in 2-3 weeks. If I paid in full, they would be there Monday. Called the sheriff and let them handle it.
Cost me about $3K for material in June for 26 & 1/2 yards. Single story house with porch, otherwise straight roof. Deputy escorted him into the county jail for further investigation

If he had been on my roof with out permission he would get slapped with trespassing plus damage to the roof and any thing else I could slap him with

Were the plates North or South Carolina by chance? I forget right off hand where those Irish Gypsies are from, but I guess I finally abused them bad enough that they haven't stopped in here wanting to paint roofs for a few years now.

How did you get a deputy out there quick enough? If that had happened here the guy would have been across the next county before any enforcement would drag in here.

Brand new roof needs repalcing becaues it"s shot - HA HA.

Did he have a silvery spray rig in the back of his truck? Their "replacement" consists of spraying a mix of used motor oil and aluminum paint. It lasts until the first hard rain.

This is a shingled roof. Got luck, deputy was patrolling about 2 miles from the house. License plates were from louisana.

Do you mean this is not just the "free enterprise system" at its best? Why is the deputy investigating? We don't need no damn laws or government to hinder hard working business men trying to make an honest living. Here is a hard working guy, up on your roof, trying to save you from harm and you are questioning his motives. Shame on you!

Think about it! You want the law to save you....but you (and a lot of others) want no laws. Hum??????

We used to have a guy and his kid come around from the south, and always during harvest time. IIRC, Costello was his name. They did bin, barn, and roof painting. There was a guy they called "The Tin Man" that actually did the painting, because that's what he looked like when he was done with the job. They actually did decent work for years, but the last job was done with about 94% regular unleaded and 6% silver paint. It washed off during the first rain. They haven't been back since.

I'm surprised the sheriff didn't try to arrest YOU. That's what usually happens these days. You catch a guy red-handed, and the sheriff wants to just let him go. After all he hasn't done any damage yet, or the thing that he's stealing isn't very valuable.

Big Ruh, Please excuse the sarcasm of my earlier post. Just being a smart azz. But, I am just tired of the inconsistency of the people on this forum and America in general.

We want law and order. Which means we must have laws (rules) and order (law enforcement). Then people complain about the laws and the strucure we put in place to enforce them. America, make up your mind.

Too bad so many folks only want laws which protect them..not vice versa.

Same is true of free enterprise. Thieving and piracy might be called free enterprise, but that guy on your roof was not a business man....he was a con artist. Big difference.

Still, can not understand how they could arrest him...for what? He had to have violated some law, or his rights were violated.

If had just been in the drive he wouldn't have been trespassing if the drive is not posted or doesn't have a gate. He was on his roof. That's trespassing for one charge. Trying to run a con is also illegal. That's trying to defraud, that's the second charge. When the OP was able to tell the cop that the roof was new a couple of months ago the con man had made the attempt to defraud. So if the cop decides to haul the guy in to run him through the computer for possible other wants or warrants the cop was on firm legal ground. I don't know how long they can legally hold him in the OP's state but certainly long enough to run a check on him. If the prosecutor decides to actually charge the guy he can then be run in front of a judge to determine if there will be bail or not.

With the arrest the cops can impound the vehicle and have it towed too.

No inconsistency here; this has nothing to do with free enterprise or individual freedoms. This is criminal activity.

Unlikely the guy was a con artist though. The offer to replace the roof for $20K was his way of getting told to leave and not come back. He needed an invitation to leave because he wasn't there to sell a new roof.

Did he talk with a very thick accent, stutter, or other speech impediment? They use that to keep you off balance while they BS you. Best way to counter that is to pretend you're deaf and make him keep repeating what he's saying so you have time to think it over. But walk around the house first to make sure the doors and windows are secured. Chances are good there was a second guy hiding somewhere, the one on the roof was a lookout

You catch someone on your roof messing around, he's darned well TRESPASSING! I'm not sure if I would have called the sheriff before he "fell off the roof" or not.

Tom they have had this "home repair" scam going on for quite some time. Lot of time the homeowner hasn't been on the roof and has no real idea of the condition. They show up uninvited, unannounced and tell you your roof is in bad shape and that they can protect you and your house, if pay up front and I'll be here in X number of days with the crew. Unsuspecting homeowner falls for it, writes a check which is promptly cashed and the "con-tractor" disappears, never to be seen again. They worked that scam up here a few years ago. Got 2-3 people, mostly elderly to sign a check and fake contract and were gone.

Hey Big, Don't you feel like a wimp now with all these guy telling you how much tougher they would have been on the guy, LOL?

Irish Gypsies are from North Augusta, SC, just across the Savannah river from Augusta, Ga. Their neighborhood used to be mostly mobile homes, but there has been a steady increase in nice homes, recognizable by having very fancy front doors. As I remember the story, they leave the house vacant for a year so the evil spirits leave, then have the house blessed by a priest. They were brought to the US from Ireland by an Irish priest, Father Murphy, I think in the early 20th century. They believe God placed other people on earth for them to live off of, or so I have heard. One of them has painted roof for me for years, paint has held up ok. Once I provided the paint fro him to do the job and his paint lasted about as well. Hid business model is to do a good job and get repeat business. The person that Bug Ruh had dealings with wanted a one time score.

What was he doing on Your roof?
You did not request it.
Take the ladder and call the sheriff first and ask questions later.

Nope, don't feel like a wimp at all. Deputy just left, guy has several out standing warrants on him from several states. Now they have to decide which one gets him first.

yep You would have him treed then ,,as a Home improvement contractor 30 yrs ago , My Ladder blew over while repairin A ROOF ON THE WAY HOME ,, this time a year ,,. getting dark,, little old lady came out , cause she heard the ladder fall , LUCKY ME , since no one answered the door earlier , I really thought no One was at home ,. she had to call a distant neighbor to set the ladder up so I could get down

I agree with TomH, the guy on the roof was a probably the lookout in a burglary. I'm surprised you caught him in the act.

Don't let that stop you from pressing charges.
