Farmall H Battery box

I have a 1941 H that I purchased a new battery box for. My problem is that the cover touches the batter posts when I put it on. I removed the 2 rubber bumpers over the post and the metal bumper brackets still touch. I am told by several dealers that all group 1 batteries are the same size. I can grind the brackets out and I may have enough clearence, but I do not understand why "it just does not fit". Has anyone else had this problem?

Cover should have 3 bumpers and they are staggered to miss the posts.

Have you tried turning the cover end to end?

The battery is a 6 volt group 1, 8 5/8" tall. The box is 9" outside but only 8 1/2" inside due to the raised bottom to accomadate the base mounting bolts. The cover can only go on one way. There are 4 bumpers, and even if I remove the ones over the post, the brackets that held the bumpers still touch the posts. The battery box came from Yesterdays Tractors as a replacement and was ordered by part number.

The botton of the box should have two recessed slots to accomodate square headed bolts and still give you the full 9" height. See pic.

That is exactly like mine. Those raised slots are what make the box only 8 1/2" on the inside. I have tried 2 battery shops to see if there is a shorter 6V battery, but no luck so far.

My first thought was that the aftermarket battery box was built wrong, but I have a 1950 H, with the original battery box, and I can't put the lid on it either.

The slots in the pic are facing down and your's are facing up. Looks like your box was put together wrong. Can you drill out the spot rivets and turn the bottom plate over? Have you talked with the outfit where you got it?

My box is just like the one pictured. The design allows the bolt heads to clear the base of the battery. I am wondering if batteries have grown just a little since the 1940's? Usually when something does not work or fit it is because I screwed it up. But this seems pretty simple and should just fit. Kind of at a loss......
