Planting wheat 2013

Just a shot of wheat planting 2013 with only the most modern equipment. Well, almost modern? Tractor is a 1948 Allis-Chalmers B that my Dad bought new. Grain drill is a John Deere Van Brunt model FF, made about 1921. I bought it from the son of the original owner who used it until he quit farming in the late 50's. No idea about the cultipacker, a neighbor gave it to me for a small welding job about 20 years ago.

We always want the ground disked and level for the drill. Will not some of that be covered too deep? DIFFRENT in different parts of the country.
 
Great photo. I remember when Dad planted over 400 acres each year with a drill about that size (12'), then two drills, then a 40'+ drill. Price of wheat was about the same all of those years. We always planted after using a Rod Weeder. (sp)
 
I plow, disc, then cross disc with a spring tooth harrow behind the drill. Always had good stands this way, but if my combine had a straw chopper I think I could just disc and plant.
 
We had a straw chopper on our combine and after white beans just drilled but after soys would disc lightly and drill. Done till next Aug. Between wheat,soys and hay one man with minimal equipment outlay can farm a lot of acres because you are only farming 1/3 at any one time.
 
I'm going to an auction about a mile straight west of me as the crow flies--he's 3680 and I'm 3678--Saturday with the hopes of buying a drill just like that, except someone bolted rubber on the wheels. It's an 11 hole and should work great for my food plots. Kid says his dad planted wheat with it. If I win, I'll bring it home with my tractor.

IF you were going to sell your drill, what would be a fair price to ask? Kind of trying to get a feeling for the one at the auction Saturday.
