Gave this field a light coat of manure in January. Took a cut of hayoff,May27. Then I ploughed it over and disced it twice, and ran the corn planter over it on June 12. Finished cutting corn, October 3rd. Never had a double crop field yield as wel as this one did. You can see corn tassels over the tractor cab. Notice how the hard frost we had 2 weeks eariler had fied the top 3 feet of the corn, while the bottom part is still green. I was very glad to have this corn chopped when we did, as it rained for 5 days strait, and things are wet, and muddy now. My wife took these pictures of my brother ,son and myself working. The view of the pit silo, is what I could see from the field. Bruce

That is an outstanding field of corn! Interesting, though, how the frost did it. I guess it was too thick for it to get any farther down the stalk.

I started chopping yesterday. I'm blown away by how well it's turning out for corn planted June 22 and 23. I cut back on population too from 28,000 to 24,000 and didn't get any extra nitrogen on it either,or manure because it was too wet. Just 250 pounds of triple 19 starter.

Green corn will emit heat at night most likely kept the lower areas where more dense above freezing. Interesting physics though as cold air is more dense and typically closer to the ground.

Usually when tops are frosted off like that it means it was a clear still night. The radiant heat loss (exposure) to a clear sky can allow freezing with the air temp just a bit above freezing. The leaves on top "shade" the bottom material from the radiant heat loss.

Next clear still night stand and face the face and try to feel how cold your cheeks are. Then go stand in a car port where the air is the same temp but face the roof. You can usually feel the difference easily. If not grab your flir camera and it will show you.

If there is much wind the air movement will keep the plants from freezing from exposure.
