OT - Wild Pears, Burning Bush, Sumac leaves and Sunset

In addition to the many "wild" apple trees on my property, I have a lot of "wild"
pear trees. I assume they may have derived from domestic trees?
My burning bush is going to be pretty nice this year.

Even the lowly sumac is quite beautiful this time of year. The sunset is a view from my dining room window.

gotta look twice at that sunset, looks like the woods are on fire. Those pears look like ones we used to call sugar pears. Why I do not know because they were not sweet at all.

Korn,
Now that I look back at the picture, I can see that it really does look like a forest fire!!
All of these pics were take this evening.

Sumac doesn't take a back seat to any trees, including maples. Often leaves are multi-colored on the same shrub.

We get that same "on fire" appearance when the sun sets behind our woods too.

Brian, we have a similar pear which the old timers called the "Cooking Pear" - can still buy it as a "Kiefer Pear".
Its a hard pear, not real sweet to eat, but gets better if pick them and place in a cool storage for a few weeks til they turn yellow - -then pretty good.
But, they are best as Pear Preserves, which was and is a major treat in my family.
Peel them, dice up in 1/4"x 1/2" x 1/4" strips, cover with sugar and let stand overnight. Then cook down slowly the next day until pears are just translucent pink.
DO NOT OVERCOOK or they will "candy" to a sticky mess.
Put in pint jars while hot, pour extra cooked juice in to fill jars.
Serve with hot biscuits and butter on a cold snowy day, or on hot pancakes, and it is food fit for the godds.
Or, peel and freeze them, mix with equal parts apples and makes a great multi-fruit pie.
Course, I'm very particular: I only eat 2 kinds of pie: Hot or Cold!! {:)

Take Care!
John

Like those pictures but hate to think about what is coming. Those pictures from the Wyoming storm posted previously tell the tale.
