Ot, wood splitter problem.

My father bought this splitter about 4 years ago, I never used it or seen it work. Well he told me in August I could use it to split some chunks of wood I got. I have a horizontal splitter and a 3pt tractor splitter, but I think he wanted to be helpful and offered me his. We started it up at his house and the ram wasent moving as fast as my brothers which I've seen work, snd is the same splitter. We check the hydro oil and it's below the low mark, and the pump is really noisy. Dad said it gets faster after it warms up? Ya dad it's 75 degrees out. Any ideas what's wrong with it? I told him I'm not using it and possibility damamaging it further, which I think he may have already done.

We did add oil, I don't know if it ever had enought oil in it when he bought it, and he broke the return line, had a new one made and maybe he never checked the oil afterwards? Maybe he damaged the pump buy this point?

Does it sound like there might be air in the system? Mine fusses a little after I moved it by hand if I tipped it up too far. Cycling it a few times clears it.

Did you run it after you added the oil? It may take some time to work the air out of it. Did you use hydraulic oil? If the oil is foamed it may have to set awhile for the foam to dissipate. If it still does not work properly after all this then the pump is probably bad.

Yes I ran it for a few minutes, but the pump is nosiey, I can run it tomarrow some more, he said it always ran that way? But I don't think it's right. Thanks for the help.

The ones with the Vertical motors are a real bear about getting air in the system while setting. Brother has one that has been noisy when first started since day one. It is 15 years old and still working. HE found that you need to keep the oil right at the fill mark. Then run it about half throttle and cycle the ram a few times stop to stop. His usually is quiet after that.

Thanks for the help, I'm cursed, last Saturday it was my bale thrower! Ill try to run it more tomarrow. Also would air in it slow down the cylinder speed?

Friend of mine has one just like it. Was you using it in the vertical position? On his when it was in the upright position it kinked the return hose to the tank and would run slow.

(quoted from post at 05:44:32 10/06/13) The hydraulic filter may need changing. It may be so clogged that the flow is restricted.

I agree with macec3(TX) to change the filter. That's the easiest thing to try 1st. Then I'd check the pressure relief valve if filter didn't speed it up

It should have a 2-stage pump. That means fast until it hits the log, then it slows down to high-pressure mode.

Just a theory, but maybe the first-stage is stuck. Don't know how you'd fix something like that or if it can even be fixed.
