Allis Chamber conversion

I have an 1961 Allis Chambers D-15 (gas) and I am having trouble with my charging system, for price and being practical, I am wanting to change to an Altenator, will this be a problem since it has a positive ground?
And is there anything I need to know about the ignition system?

Thanks very much, Larry

Almost all alternators are negative ground. You "ll have to reverse battery and probably the coil. There are directions somewhere on this board for conversion to alternators. Someone can probably post a link. GM 10SI is most commonly used. Probably biggest challenge is physically mounting the alternator.

Put a GM 10SI 1 wire alternator on it, you will need to re-do the bracket, just run the 1 wire to the old BAT terminal on the regulator, disconnect and tape off the F & A terminal wires. Reverse the coil wires. If you want the ammeter to read charge, when charging, you will need to reverse the 2 wires on the back.

Hardest part is the alt bracket, I reverse the standard one, and trim up the alternator case, to fit the reversed bracket. Also you will need an adjuster bracket, for the top of the alternator. I like to find a curved GM bracket, like from a 327 corvette, to chop up to make the adjuster bracket.

"Allis Chambers" has been making appearances on this board for years. Suprised you haven't heard about her by now.

It is not difficult to set up a 10SI alternator for positive ground but I would not recommend that you use one in this case. Most people when seeing the alternator will assume that it is negative ground and that can cause problems if they were to jump start it or add electrical accessories.

Leave it generator. Just put on a new regulator and get your starter and generator rebuilt. Therefore you can get and use original wiring harnesses and you can troubleshoot using the original wiring schematic.

And PLEASE don't use Allis Chamber again. Its Chalmers. Hearing or reading that is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me!

You guys are all complaining/making fun/criticizing, but I *KNOW* for a fact that most of you would get your shorts in a wad if anyone ever called your spelling into question!

"WHAT DOES IT MATTER AS LONG AS THE MESSAGE GETS ACROSS!??!" you'd wail.

You knew he was talking about an Allis CHALMERS, right? The message got across, right? So, what does it matter?

It matters to me because I could spell it since I was 5 years old. I am sorry but I do find it offensive. I have a friend named Joel, he has work shirts that say "Joel" on it, all of the time customers call him "Joe" or "Joey" and even his boss referred to him as "Joseph" until he pointed to his shirt one day and said its "Joel". I find it common courtesy.

I know a JD guy that went off to me one day how every once I a while they will spell it "Deer" and not "Deere". If he can complain about that I can complain about this.

I am not stepping off my soap box.

There was nothing malicious or negative about how he pointed out an error.

He was simply providing the correct information for the author's edification.

Really JimIA, you find it offensive? If it's so offensive, why were you laughing at your post regarding you being offended? "lol" See what you did there?
Your snobbery and rudeness to the op offends me, please don't do it again. I learned manners by the time I was 5 years old.

Oh yeah, yer buddy needs to change his name.

My apologies Ron. I have removed the LOL.

Yes I am sorry I am offended by this. Sorry if that offends you, we are all different. I was also taught to be polite and have manners. Notice I also said "Please". I was also told to do things correctly, don't call other people names and treat others as you want to be treated. So if someone asks me that they want something pronounced or spelled in a certain way and they can prove it to be correct, I respect their wishes and do as they wish.

Last set of generator brushes I bought cost $3.00.I would check out the generator first.Have you added up the total cost of changing to an alternator?Ive done alternator and generator repair.Alternators are not weather proof so I question how long they will last on a tractor.

GOOD POINT!
