3pt backhoe problem

At an auction I bought a nice little Taylorway 3pt hitch backhoe my 861 Ford can carry around.

Slight problem though - pull back on the joystick to raise the main boom SLOWLY and the boom will fall. Pull it half way or more and it works fine and raises the boom like it should.

Is there an reason that the boom falls or an adjustment in the spool valve to eliminate it?

The most common cause for that is the seal on the piston in the cylinder. When you try to move it slow the oil leaks by the seal and when you pull more on the handle it flows more oil wich pushes the seal out toward the cylinder wall and seals it. There are check valves in the control valve that could cause it but they usually don't bother unless somebody has had them apart.

i"d say the spool valve has a leak ...if it was in the cylinder it would go down on it"s own

We have run into this many times on both backhoe and loader cylinders and people always blame the valve but it very seldom is. The type of seals being used in many cylinders today will actually roll some so that they will do what he described.
