howdy loren, have a case 400 question. last year you helped on my neighbors 400 gasser. over the weekend he pulled the tractor out of the shed (sat there since last year) and got it running. he is going to use it on the auger. the pto constantly spins, whether it is engaged or not. when coupled up to the auger, it doesnt spin when disengaged, but you can see a little tension on the pto shaft. when you engage the pto, it runs the auger fine. we looked for the manuals in the shed, but cannot find em. any adjustment or brake on the pto? when disengaged, the pto is running at speed, not just turning slowly. tia, glenn

Glenster,
Early 400s didn't have a brake.
on later ones there was a triger on the lever that locked the lever against a brake. You could Try loosing the clutch pack a notch or two to open up the discs if it doesn't have the lever with the triger.

Just an added caution. An auger shouldn't be much of a load, but be sure if you back off the adjustment a bit, and you are running a big auger which works the tractor, you could slip the clutch pack and warp the plates so it will not stop on anything with a light load.
