jd 4440 vs ih 5088

I know all about john deere 4440's, great tractors. How are ih 5088's? I'm kinda thinking ahead of my little operation and thinking I may be looking for an older but good tractor in the 130hp range in the future. I have had my heart set on a 4440 but they are expensive for a good one. I came across a 5088 that is considerably cheaper. I have zero experience with these. What's the good and bad? Are parts a problem?

unless the 5088 has the trans. updates you might have problems if you are doing alot of heavy work, (the teeth would strip off of the power shift disks), if it has the updates or is late enough to have them then I wouldn't be afraid of one,I like the IH engine and prefer it to the jd in that respect,a 4440 has a pretty good trans and rear end but the engine doesn't make much torque and they drink alot of fuel for the power they make, if you want something that makes alot of power on not much fuel and won't cost much then buy a 2390 Case

Mid Michigan. Looking on craigslist, tractorhouse, and the farm trader, it seems a 4440 with duals, decent rubber and good shape brings low 20k's on up. I've seen a couple 5088's between 15k-20k. I'm just looking at pics and descriptions, haven't layed my hands on either.

The IH 5088 will usually sell for as much as JD 4440 or even more. I wounder about why the one you have found is cheap??? Like others have posted you need to make sure you are looking at either a late model or one that has had the updates done.

The JD 4450 was the direct competition to the IH 5088.

As far as parts they are not as many used ones salvaged. The new parts are not an issue yet. You will not find the number of after market parts for the IH 5088. There just where not that many of them sold.

They usually sell pretty fast as the IH guys usually are looking for the last "IH" models.

Be Careful! 5088's had rear end trouble. 5288 have a different rear end. they don't make the parts to fix the 5088; you have to have them machined. the junkyards have none. speaking from experience on a 1 owner 5088 with 5k hours. pulling an 8/30 planter at the time it broke. high dollar repair!

If you want cheap power get an old 1066or 1466. Much cheaper than both and easy to work on. By now probably already had the trans gone through and traded off for that latest greatest model.
