Rust removal before painting

I have a Ford 1100 (about 1980) that I bought used a few years ago. I am not going to restore it, but I would like to work on the fenders, which have visible rust pits. Does anyone have some advice on how to remove this rust and fill the pits before I prime and repaint?

I don't have a sandblaster, but would consider renting one if that is the way to go. Incidentally, the rust doesn't seem to have gotten much worse than it was when I bought the tractor--I keep it in a well-ventilated garage when it's not in use.

Electrolysis is the easiest, once you build a tank big enough to hold the parts. Second best is a wire wheel cup on an angle grinder but you need heavy clothing to keep those flying wires out of your hide. Safety glasses are very important!

After you remove the rust, treat the metal with phosphoric acid then prime. Use a high build primer and/or spot putty, sand, and prime again until you have a smooth surface. Then new paint.

I'd just pay someone to sandblast them. If you don't have your own sandblaster, it would be cheap compared to finding a way to do it yourself.

Then use primer, and if needed spot putty, to level the surface.

Rust-O-Leum "Rust Converter" does a very good job of stopping rust, once you get the worst of it off..

Been holding it at-bay on my old Jeep for years, with only that..

Can paint right over it, it says..

When you have pits it is a really good idea to use the phosphoric acid wash. Sand or soda blasting is the best way to get the rust out of pits, but even a particle too small to see will start growing right after the primer dries. The phosphoric product will convert the residual rust to inert iron phosphate.

All good advise. Like showcrop said I use a product from TP tools here in Ohio that chemically converts the rust and leaves an excellent surface to paint over called metal prep. Use the electrolysis bath when I can too.

Use a 40 grit flap wheel on your angle grinder on the worst pits. Then 80 grit paper on your 5 inch DA sander on the whole fender. Treat the worst rust areas with metal prep. Then prime. Then fill in apparent large pits with bondo. Sand and prime as necessary for paint able surface.

The rust converters never seem to work for me. Sure the rust turns black and all, but then it comes right back through the paint.
