when I go to a sale to "buy" something, I always have a realistic price in my mind what I will pay. When the item comes up ,I don't bid. I wait. Then if it is still what I think it is worth, after two other guys have bid hot and heavy, till there is just one left, then I will bid. Really curdles the milk of the guy that thought he "had it" after the first guy quit. This takes some discipiline. You can get caught up in the moment, and bid too much. Sometimes the other guy just gives up, sometimes you make him pay a lot more/or a fair price. Got to watch yourself, or you can be the sucker. it can be fun. Bruce

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

BUT you can also miss items. I was at a sale just three weeks ago and wanted a box of stuff off the junk wagon. Had some chain breakers in it, along with some other desirables. Guy next to me and a guy across the wagon started bidding. It went to to $16 and the guy next to me quit. I was willing to pay $20, so I raised my hand, but the auctioneer already said SOLD to the other fellow. They don't look for the backup all the time...

Or.. if the auction is moving fast the auctioneer and his helpers may not see you if you weren't in the fray and try to jump in at the last minute.

Bruce, we think alike. The first bid seldom takes the item home, its the guy with the last bid.
