Buying a Ferguson TO-35

I am going to look at a Ferguson TO-35 gas tractor this weekend. A good friend of mine that has been working on tractors for 50 years said if it starts and has good tires buy it. I am looking to get it for $1800. Are there any particular things I should look at before I by it. I know new tractors but am not familiar with these old work horses. I am sure I will love using it and working on it I just wondered if this is a good price and what to look for as far as possible problems. The paint is good and the tires are all new. Except I have to have one of the back tires turned around.

Mine is a 1955 TO-35. I paid $2500 for it. I was willing to pay whatever was asked because this unit is one my uncles bought new, and I grew up with it. It'll never leave the family again!
 
A friend gave me mine. Look for live PTO / dual stage clutch (Deluxe model) and a good strong 3 point lift. I have a little trouble with hood latches and the clutch slips in thick grass with 5 ft. bush hog. One of my most dependable.
 
The new tires make it an excellent buy. With average tires but otherwise good condition, $1,800 would be an average price.
 
Check for water in the oil ( milky looking oil) or droplets of oil in
the water. Check for engine blow-by fumes by pulling the dipstick
or removing the oil filler cap when the tractor is warmed up and
running. . plus all the things others have pointed out.

I will check the oil and water. That is a good point to see if the head gasket is gone. I can not pass it up if it runs well. We need to do a bit of land clearing, brush hogging and garden plowing. I think this should work well for us. I was looking at 8N's then I came across this model and I think I will be a lot happier with the to-35. Thanks for the input. I have some more weapons to use when looking over the old beast.
