I just recieved a recall notice for my 04 toyota tundra. The frames are rusting out, and in some cases they are replacing the entire frame or if the rust isn't to bad they coat the frame with a chemical.Any Ytr's been thru this, I have heard some horror stories about the cost of items they break or cut off such as shocks, breaklines u-bolts etc.It is suposed to be no charge and am told to make it clear up front if they break or damage it they replace it no charge. What say you.

They have been replacing those frames for years, they know what what they are doing. I have not heard anything but good comments from the folks who have had the work done.

They may offer you a choice of fixing yours or a generous trade in allowance on a new one. If you are concerned, you may consider the trade offer.

They had me bring in my '03 Tundra a few years ago, but there was no rust as it's never been driven in snow or ice so they didn't do anything to it.

Same as Hoof Print said! The Toyota dealer was nothing but very help and generous. If the frame is damaged beyond a safe repair, they may offer you a generous offer towards a trade or buy you out right. In my case, they bought the truck out right paying more for the truck than what I paid 3 years earlier.

Thanks for the replies I hope my experiance goes as well, 140000 miles and no problems other than brakes last month you can't ask for better than that.

When's the last time anyone's heard of any of the big 3 warranteeing ANYTHING with 140,000 mi on it? Says right in their (big 3 ) warrantee books they are not responsible for any corrosian caused by road chemicals. Toyota,Honda and VW will soon be the big 3.

ANYTHING,,, Chrysler warranted a repair for the air bag system on a 2000 mini van today for one of my customers,,, it had 145000 miles on it... They told me it had a lifetime warranty on that system...

I have a 89 that I bought new and drove it till I had a flat. When I jacked it up at the frame the rear end fell out. They won t give me jack for it.

Does anyone know why they are rusting out? Poor product material or in the process somehow. To your mention on US products they just don't have that problem anymore. At least not enough for the almighty news media to find out.

quality, quality, quality.

This ain't about quality.

It is about reputation and the reality.

Reality, reality, reality.

Do what you can to CYA.

Toyota and VW are already in the big 3 with GM. Diamler isn't even close to being in the big 3, nor do they deserve to. Bunch of Italian designed and engineered crap

You made me think of something this lady was drivining around this past election with these signs that said buy american yet she was driving a toyota. I thought how dumb so I heckled her and said you buy american then she proclaimed that gm came into her home and took her money. My answer was that japan killed all are grand fathers then we rebuilt all there factorys.... Shut her up... Rember we blew all there factorys up then payed to rebuild them germans to how quick we forget that.

Hmmm. Someone just posted yesterday how they would buy a Toyota because it has a C-channel frame, vs. a Ford/Chevy boxed frame. They were afraid a boxed frame would trap moisture and corrode.

Based on Toyotas current track record with frames they might want to re-think that statement. This recall has been out there for a while now.

When they do your frame swap, they will likely try to charge you for all the ancillary parts you mentioned. They will tell you that the shocks were completely worn out anyway, multiple fasteners etc. Make sure you hold them responsible.

Story in the car magazines said those frames were box frames with holes on top to let salt and water /mud in, but no way for the stuff to wash / drain out. Thats why Toyota is not too keen on building more box frames.

I dont know if the replaced frames are improved to lessen the problem or what ?

seems I remember that the problem years were Tacoma 95-2005.

Nothing new for Toyota. New someone that had a new Mojave truck they kept in great shape but had to scrap because the frame rusted out. The early trucks were also known for boxes rusting really badly.

My brothers Tacoma had 165000 on it and Toyota bought it back. 1999 model I think. They gave him almost 10 grand for it. He didn't want to give it up, but for that kind of coin who could refuse.

I haven't checked my '11 Silverado, but on my '05 and '07 Dodge Rams the frame was full of foam and the slots where it was installed were sealed. Maybe that's why.

Other reason for a boxed frame vs a C channel which most used to have is weight. Less weight more MPG. People knock plastic, but plastic is a lot lighter than steel so OEMs seem to use it every chance they get.

I wish Ford would own up to the rusting crap they put under their late 90's early 2000 trucks and SUVs. Fighting the rust monster on a 2000 Expedition, already replaced the lower control arms (went to a racing suspension mfg. in Indiana for the parts, half the price of what Ford wanted) the uppers are on their way out, all the brake and tranny lines have been replaced. Any thinner metal underneath is about gone, but the frame seems solid for now. Had a Ranger that the rear shackles just dissolved. The place I took it to said they do 2 -3 replacements a day on them.

Love the vehicles, hate the rust.

My 1965 IH Scout, had a fully boxed frame, and
no frame rust problems! If International could
do it then, why couldn"t Toyota do it in the
2000"s ? (of course the IH sheet metal is an
entirely different matter !)

Yup, always a trade-off between weight and fuel economy.

Dodge just announced a 30,000lb towing capacity for its 2013 3500. Of course this is in a 2wd regular cab combo only. I haven't had a chance to look at the frame underneath but I imagine its beefy.
