2013 corn harvest under way, some pictures

Well after a brush with frost last week,my 2013 corn silage harvest is under way. I have only one of my three sons home on the farm ith me now. And looks like he will make a career of farming. Other two boys work away, and like to chase girls and blow thier money. So , that leaves us short one man to pull wagons. So my second oldest brother, Bill, offered to come and pull some corn wagons for me. And he is a big help. Bill is 65, and a retired Police officer, and runs about 30 beef cows. So no need to train him on running a tractor. But doing corn silage is new for him, When I look at the pictures from this year, it looks almost the same as every other year, just a lot nicer , sunny and warm. Last picture show a few of the wrapped bales I made this year Bruce

Bruce.
Sounds like youir weather has been about the same as ours. Last week we had 4 straight days of cloudless skies and then a light rain over Saturday night, and cleared by Sunday noon. This week we have had heavy fog each morning, that burns off by about 10:00 and then perfect fall weather. The uncles have cut all their 3rd cutting alfalfa, and it is being rounded up and trucked out. Yielding almost 3 1 ton bales per acer.
The bean fields are very uneven, as far as maturity, and the corn is so-so. All waiting to drydown for combining. Our only frost was light and not a killer.

Your pictures are very nice. That reminds me how we filled silos back in the 1940's and 50's. We used a Papec silage cutter for years. Had to hire extra help and it took several weeks to fill both silos. In 1949 our neighbor bought a chopper and did custom silo filling. He used dump trucks to haul the silage. My dad hired them. We had an old 10-20 McCormick Deering on the blower. Kept 2 or 3 men in the silo for tramping and one to keep the tractor serviced. In 3 days both silos were filled. Hal

I don't know when I'm gonna get started chopping. I was hoping for next Monday, but the bulk of the silage corn isn't even dented yet. I chopped a load to feed yesterday, there were a few solid kernels in it,but not many. I just hope the weather doesn't change so I have to deal with mud. Looks like I can push the plans back for at least another week.

Good looking corn Bruce, lots of tonnage there. It is nice to have good help from your son and brother. Someone posted about filling a silo way back in the day and I remember those days well. It sure was hard work and slow then but now a couple of workers can put up enough silage to last a good sized farm all year.
I am harvesting about 70 acres of corn this fall but it will all go through the combine. One of my sons will help me if not working but my main helper is my wife who is worth 3 hire hands.

with the drought the last month or so alot of guys here in Northern Indiana are already done filling silos. Some are still at it. Most are just starting now in a normal year. Some are even shelling corn too but I'm sure their spending money at the dryer. even seen a field or 2 of beans off. VERY early for that.

It was so stinking miserable wet this spring I didn't even get my silage corn planted until June 21-22-23. And it was 98 day corn to boot.

A year ago I was done and the corn had gotten so dry that it was two weeks before it even started to ferment. I started right in picking a few days after I got done chopping. Whole different year.

Good to hear one of your sons wants to learn the business.

Thanks for the pictures.

Nice pictures of a nice harvest! We don't do much corn in Ireland as 3 cuts of grass silage bulks better and is more profitable. I cut 11 acres of third cut grass and baled and wrapped it on 2nd Sept. got 10 4'x4'6" bales to the acre. That is 16,12 and 10 bales in 3 cuts=38 bales per acre.

Hi Bruce, Sam, Loren, thanks for sharing the great pictures.
I kind of miss silo filling. My brother quit growing corn in 2005. Always would help for a week in Sept and weekends until all the corn was chopped.

Guys are having a terrible time here. Just get a day or two, then it floods again.
Got hammered again, with 1.5" Sat. Had water standing and running everywhere.
Over 26" since it started this crap in late May.
