About Auctions,I have said: "You spend money you dont have on stuff you dont need....".Any else have that 'problem'?

I stood out in a cold rain at one one time. A neighbor asked if I'd ever seen anything more foolish than a bunch of farmers standing out in the rain waiting to spend their money. I said "yea,us farmers who are standing out here in the rain who don't have any money".

Couple years ago I went to an auction with a lot of Ac PARTS. Spent over 200 and didn"t think I had much to show for it....some parts might not be good- just cuz he saved them doesn"t meaqn they"re ok. Decided I"ll just stick to buying from a friend who is fair priced, and I know it works.

That is WHY I should take your money DeltaRed and buy stuff at auctions my wife doesn't need but I want. Win Win LOL

Used to like to go to auctions but anymore just dont have the patience unless there are a majority of items am interested in, not primarily to buy just interested in seeing what they bring! Seems like if go for a particular item and if there are only 10 people there 8 of them are after same item I am and it starts out for more then I wanted to give!!!! Wont even considered going for tools, most of the time they go for more then new price!!

What pizzes me off more than anything else is when you go to an auction for some piece of machinery you can use, stand around half of the day, put up with the straw bidders, and the 'internet bidders', bid on a piece, and then have the auctioneer come out with "NO SALE" because it has a ridiculous reserve bid. If they want to sell something for a higher price, why take it to an auction and then waste peoples time and gas....

YES I had it most of my life, at an auction I was like an alcoholic in a liquor store lol. If something was cheap Id buy it even if there was no immediate need whatsoever. Some things I bought I still have for like 40 years and still havent used them, so how cheap was it really??? Also, even if I had something I couldnt find it so went to town and bought new and a day later found it grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr However once I quit farming, retired and taken up more RV travel to our great National Parks (Americas Best idea) Ive finally gotten rid of much of it and dont go to many auctions IVE BEEN CURED LOL

What's worse is to drive a good distance to one,run in to one of your best friends and find out you both drove all the way there for the same item. BTDT lol

Local auction Friday and Sat., but I won't go. I WILL NOT pay an auctioneer a "buyer's premium" (10% in this case) for the privigle to sell something to me.

I attend local auctions often. I'm often puzzled by things that sell for more than new. An old gentleman at the last sale kept buying stuff at inflated prices, IMO, and I wondered (one) if the auctioneer had a "sucker" or (two) should someone be making sure he's competent to manage his money. Auctions are like the casino; stop when you've lost all you can afford or when it goes higher than you wanted to spend. Always exceptions, but it works for me.

To me auctions are a waste of time, i got better things to do than waiting half the day for a piece i'm interested in only to see it go for a crazy price, either that or it is a piece of junk not worth loading up.

Happened to me once on a log splitter.

My neighbor said he didn't want to bid against me. I told him, "I thought that was what auctions were for".

when I go to a sale to "buy" something, I always have a realistic price in my mind what I will pay. When the item comes up ,I don't bid. I wait. Then if it is still what I think it is worth, after two other guys have bid hot and heavy, till there is just one left, then I will bid. Really curdles the milk of the guy that thought he "had it" after the first guy quit. This takes some discipiline. You can get caught up in the moment, and bid too much. Sometimes the other guy just gives up, sometimes you make him pay a lot more/or a fair price. Got to watch yourself, or you can be the sucker. it can be fun. Bruce

Bruce, we think alike. The first bid seldom takes the item home, its the guy with the last bid.

Or.. if the auction is moving fast the auctioneer and his helpers may not see you if you weren't in the fray and try to jump in at the last minute.

BUT you can also miss items. I was at a sale just three weeks ago and wanted a box of stuff off the junk wagon. Had some chain breakers in it, along with some other desirables. Guy next to me and a guy across the wagon started bidding. It went to to $16 and the guy next to me quit. I was willing to pay $20, so I raised my hand, but the auctioneer already said SOLD to the other fellow. They don't look for the backup all the time...

Actually I've gotten some fantastic bargains at auctions over the years like the Ford rotary cutter in very good condition that needed a PTO shaft for $70. Took it home got a like new PTO from the barn I had gotten at an auction for $20 and have a good cutter for under $100.Bought a stack (8) 7.50 X 20 truck tires for $20 and traded them for a good running Oliver 77.Most of the tools I use Snapon,Craftsman,Mac and other brands came from auctions at a fraction of the cost of new ones.Love auctions

i quit going because i don't have the time or money anymore,,,lol didn't even go to the one in brush colo weds, and/or this comming sat...

1. I don't bid on anything I can't use.

2. I know the value of anything I'm interested and only go as high as 50% of that value.

3. I never violate rule 1 and 2.

Was interested in an item a couple of years ago. Went to the auction and would up with an old school hub puller, a 6" angle grinder and the item I wanted. Was funny on the one thing. Only one other bidder. I figured I would go to $800 and I started the bidding at $50. Was only one other guy bidding on it. Both of us would bid right away without playing any mind games. When the item got to $350 the other guy hesitated. I knew at that time that I had it cause he was close to his limit. I got it for $385. When I won the bid the guy just glared at me. I was laughing pretty hard about that for a long time. I do wind up passing on far more than I buy because of my rules. Good thing I don't have lots of money.

Auctions are a social event here. I really enjoy going to them so even if I buy nothing I still have entertainment.
