Sil is looking at 2013 F150 3.5 V6 ecoboost. Looks like an aluminum block? Any experiences with this engine? What do you think?

Have a friend that traded in a couple year old tundra on a ford 150 ecoboost 4wd and wants his tundra back, sayes the gas mileage they claim isnt there and has no where near the power of the tundra, not my experience just hearsay

I don't have a f-150. However, while at the tranny shop having my trannys serviced I ask the man who has been in the business repairing trannys, which trannys to stay away from. I think he said the f150 uses two different types of 6 speed autos. One is good and one is bad. Not sure what year he was talking about.

May research which tranny to stay away from. Perhaps he was talking about older 150.

Mine rolled up on 46,000 miles on the way to supper tonight. Pretty impressive, bood fuel mileage and will out run a xxxxx. So far pretty well satisfied.

No experience, but I'll share my opinion.

Turbo is Italian for "expensive to fix". I had the opportunity to get a turbo on a car and I passed. They provide extra HP, but I can live without it.

I don't know that I buy the MPG claims.

In my opinion again, a smaller engine working closer to its max is bound to fail before a larger engine working at half capacity.

In general, I just don't buy the claim that it is "just as good or better" and "can do everything a V8 can do" when the comparison is made. Time could very well prove me wrong, but I won't be the guy buying one to find out. My brother just bought one. I'll let him spend his money figuring it out. It won't cost me anything but bragging rights for him to tell me I was wrong!

I'm with you on do anything a V8 can, a 3.5 is only 213 cubic inches. Fords first ohv 6 was 215, course, nowday engines put out a lot more power, but it takes lots more rpm's to get it, and no lugging at all.

KF Did not mention it but the transmission is another reason I really like this truck. The six speed is really smothe. I went over in the Carolinas about 750 mile round trip. Pulling an empty car hauler over and returning with an old ih scout to had 4,000 lbs on the trailer . Came over the mountains pretty strong. Entire trip SHOWED on the mile/meter to have averaged 17.2. Long trips empty I have seen 21 + . I classify myself as a heavy foot driver, you can tell already 46,000 on a 13 month old unit.

My nephew had a afterschool/summer job tearing down engines for a rebuilder that serviced car and truck dealers. Did everything from compact car engines to class 8 diesels. He said they see a lot of the Ford eco-boost engines.

Cole Have you actually drove one? I can drive it like my big truck. If you pack off a little on a hill it will lug over in 5/6 sometimes down to 1100 rpms you are wrong on the NOT luging, get in one and try it. Not trying to convince you to buy a Ford just giving you my experience. Here on the farm and at the dealership we do have 9 pickup and trade about 2 a year so they usually go 200 thousand before retirement but NOT sure on how long will keep this one because like the other poster you would think the small engine working hard might not last as long but right now I really like this one.

The new Silverado gets better fuel milage and has more power than the eco boost nonsense.

Cole, the ecoboost makes 420lb. ft. of torque @ 2500rpm and makes 90% at 1700rpm, that's 380lb.ft. torque., most v-8s need at least 4000 rpm to make that kind of torque. I tow my 9500lb tractor on a gooseneck trailer and you never have to wind this engine out to do the job, and on a 2hr round trip towing this 9500lb. tractor it got 14.6 mpg. and empty this thing runs like a scalded dog, it is really fun to drive. Chuck

Chuck You notice all the NEGATIVE opinions are someone that has never had one. The man asked for experience .. LOL I knew this was going to be a hot one when he asked. I will be first to say I was skeptical about plunking down 2 grand more for a v6 over v8. So far have not been sorry.

Only go for it if Ford has started printing their warranties on Charmin, that way it might actually be worth something. Ford wasn't able to get/keep my 4.6 V8 running on all cylinders, good luck with them on anything more complex, if it works you'll be okay, if it doesn't understand they will not/can not fix it and you'll spend weeks waiting for parts. You'll be informed "they're all that way" (leaky pieces of junk that won't run on all cylinders)

Boss at work traded a year old Ford diesel on a 1/2 ton ecoboost-says he loves it! He is embarrassed by the pft pft at idle that sounds like a 'jetsons car', but otherwise loves it!

Just read some of the experiences with the ecoboost online. I would run from that truck and not look back. JMHO

The ecoboost is not a typical v-6 turbo engine. This is an engine that was designed from the start to be boosted so it is heavy enough to handle the stress, unlike a natural v-6 that has a turbo or blower tacked on.

Have a friend who is a diesel tech at a Ford dealership that sells a lot of trucks. He says the Ecoboost is proofing to be a very good engine and he would recommend them to anyone who doesn't need a 3/4 ton or larger pick up. He wouldn't recommend one if they weren't an excellent engine.

Well here is MY opinion. LOL

Brother-in-Law has a Ford F150 with the ecoboost. His has a cover on the bed so it NEVER hauls anything other than what you can put under the cover. He also does not have a receiver hitch on it. He just likes to drive a pickup.

His drives nice, has a lot of zip and gets pretty good gas mileage. I really like the cab better than the Chevy.

Now the bad news. His is a 2012 model. He has 42,000 miles on it now. It is on it's second turbo, I mean actual third one on it. Two replaced after the original one. He is taking it in next week because of some shifting problem. It is not wanting to shift out of sixth.

He has kept track of the repair costs. They have been covered under warranty so far. He says that the transmission issue should put it over $5000. He did buy the extended power train warranty. He says it will never go out of warranty while he owns it.

His wife, my sister, bought a Chevy 1500 the year before. Hers has the small V-8 engine in it. They say it gets better mileage and has just as much power. Her Chevy has 52,000 miles on it. She has never had it back to the dealer for anything other than oil changes.

They both like the Ford cab better. They both said they will not be buying another Ford after the troubles he has had with this one.

So thats what I know about them. Lots of guys say they are the second coming in a pickup. I just know Ford has a history of engine troubles lately. I personally would be scared to death of a Ford vehicle because of the engine issues they have had.

My tranny guy said that some were GOOD ones. So is there a tranny service tech here to add to the opinions?

My BS detector is going nuts on this one. Eco-boost has only been out a couple of years and almost all that would have had problems would have be covered by Ford and wouldn't have wound up in some aftermarket rebuilders plant. Sorry ain't buying it.

Well, I actually own one that I traded a diesel for to pull my fifth wheel camper that weighs about 9,000#. Pulls it just like the diesel and at about the same low rpm range. Now if you pull 16,000# that would be a different story. Peak torque comes in at 2,000 rpm. My 460 Ford has less hp and just a little less torque. The truck is well built and fun to drive. If I wasn't towing I would have bought the 5.0 V8 but you can't get the max tow package (11,300# tow rating) with it.

Just read where an F series truck is sold every 38 seconds - closest to that was a Toyota Camry at 50 or so seconds.

Awe come on guys, just look on you tube. There is trucks out there that can out run a eco-boost but it isn't a Tundra.

:?: Is that a Cxxxy or a Txxxa you are refering to in 'x' code? - Doesn't really matter to me 'cause I'll never buy a Txxxa or another Fxxd anyway 8)
