Massey-Harris Pony

Does anybody have a MH Pony? I got the sidemower on and adjusted by the book but it won't mow. Clogs up and pulls the tractor around and stalls it. Tried lighter grass and not better enough to mow, even going faster (in first gear). Book says use second.

Just a thought bur - On my Cub, every year it cuts very hard like you describe until it gets shined up I have to use 1st gear at a high RPM till it does. Try cutting a half bar length at first.

Assuming a sickle bar mower, the sections (knives) must be timed so they are in the center of the ledger plate (in the guard) when the eccentric drive is at full stroke. This causes the knife to be in position to make a full cut on each stroke.
If this is not correct it will plug badly. If the sections are dull, and the ledgers as well, the mower will not cut well (especially in ropy or tough material. The bar clips that hold the sickle bar into the main bar must be capable of holding the sections down against the ledger. if loose the mower will act like a pair of scissors with a loose screw. Good luck, they take some finikey adjustments to get right, but are a great mower when working. Jim

I tried that and it just pulled it to the right and clogged. Been looking at mower posts and found out mod# is 40 and drive pulley is 9 1/4". I might not have the right one. Where are you? I'm in central MA north of Quabbin Res.

The knife register is probably my trouble. I couldn't adjust the rod in front of the pitman far enough to get the knives dead center. Looks like I'll have to make another shorter (or longer) pitman. Thanks.
