Internet service

What do you all have for internet service we are thinking of changing from dial up it seem to been getting wrost then better like the said it would.

A telephone DSL or a cable setup seems best, can't beat that
actual wire coming in.

A hotspot setup over the cell networks works well and is
portable, if you are in coverage at your home, you can travel
with a laptop or tablet and get connected most places. But
they suffer from data limits, if you have multiple computers, or
use Hulu or watch YouTube a lot....

Wireless broadband tends to be smaller companies harder to
find, you need to be about 10 miles or less and line of sight to
the antenna (trees, hills, etc interfere), is similar to the cell
tower stuff but totally different, you use a BBQ type antenna to
get the connection. And you likely deal with a small local
company, they each have their own rules for data rates, limits,
etc.

Satellite deals work where nothing else does, but have a lag
time which messes up some uses of Internet (Skype, etc) and
have data limits. Hear a lot of unhappy customers with service
on these, but mountain rural areas only option.....

Started with the dialup. Local boys put up a tower and offered
high speed, like 10x dialup speed and got rid of one phone line.
Price not bad with the 2nd phone deleted. No other service but
dialup was available at the time.

Local tower service is the best fast internet deal financially, but
you have to have line of sight from antenna to antenna. Trees
prevent that as do structures, hills and the like.

As my trees grew taller they got in the way. No way was I going
to give them up so I went with the satellite. Price went up
considerably but it was faster than the current edition of local
tower service.

As time passed the satellite service upgraded to a faster edition
and I went with that for more money yet.

Now I am spoiled and figure the time we spend on the computer
is well worth the speed and corresponding price. If you do a lot
of videos or pictures, there is no comparison. No stopping in
the middle of things for the bits to catch up. And seems
everybody that puts out anything anymore, news/weather media
and all, are full of videos of all types so you can't get away from
that.

DSL here. It occasionally comes and goes, but I'm at the limit as far as line length is concerned. My son works for the phone company, and he lives a half mile away, so our line is kept pretty clean.

He tells me the satellite is nice - he installs them for the phone company - but the gamers don't like them for the lag time mentioned below, and you can somehow exceed your download package and bump yourself into a higher price. When he talks to me about price, he knows he's talking to a skinflint. I know nothing of the details, and am barely able to describe it, but thought I'd mention it so you would be aware and check before buying.

WiFi(MiFi)bundled with cell phone and land line. Also Dish on same bill for savings. With A T & T
Speed varies on the net but can watch videos 95% of the time without buffered affect.

We have a hotspot with unlimited data. Our cell company had data limits so we went with another company that offered better. Did require a signal booster for their signal, but the booster doesn"t care which signal(s) it boosts. No more dropped calls.

A smart phone for tethering is similar but we decided the hot spot was preferable as the phone was voice priority. Get a call and you lose whatever you were doing online.

We are like PJH, have DSL with Frontier and were considered at the limit from the office. It comes and goes and has heavy useage such as on holidays etc. We went with a faster service and I think that was money thrown away. I think they are all alike, at the begining with fewer people, the servers are not overloaded. Then as they get more subscribers, they get overloaded. They are always updating and most of the time it is not for our good.

We have Comcast cable for tv, phone and internet at
the house and tv with internet at the shop. It works
great most of the time and is much faster than DSL.

We're using a Verizon hotspot, plus I have a Jetpack to carry around to run my laptop when I'm on the road. We have 4 gig service, and it's been trouble free. The hotspot is $50 per month, plus $30 to add the Jetpack. For me, it's deductible.

We have a wireless cellphone home router and it is portable. Seems pretty good everywhere except my house. Cell company came out and did an inspection. Seems our closes antenna (2 miles away) sends out the frequency in 8 directions. We just happen to be right in between 2 of them, so we only get like 70 kbs for speed. We have unlimited data usage because of our old contract plan.

I am thinking of going with the dish network satellite service as this is our only alternative other than dial up. Same price as cell service and much faster. The neighbor has it and his speed is 4000-6000 kbs.

We went from Comcast to Verizon. They installed new fiber optic wires in the summer of 2009. We have our TV, Internet and Phone with Verizon. We also got AOL with it. Hal

We are so far in the stick nothing out there but satellite, Wild Blue Exceed package and very satisfied. No hope of hard line like phone or DSL or cable so stuck with what we have.

One year ago I had dial up Internet. Forever to log on and
Couldn't get on to check e mail. I bought an I pad from AT&T
and got 3 gig plan for $30 a month and no contract. One year
ago I couldn't spell e mail. Now I have learned to send some
and receive some. I get on this site daily and enjoy it. It may
not be the fastest thing around but to compare with what I had,
it's real fast. I don't ever use all my time in a month and can
cancel at any time. I stayed with AT&T because I worked for
them all my career.

After suffering with dialup for many years, I bought an AT&T 3G USB modem stick and used it for about three years. For the most part service was good although it would sometimes drop calls.

Then my wife bought a tablet so we needed Wifi. I bought a "Mifi" router from Sprint. It worked OK, but the service was terribly slow. Much worse than AT&T.

I was then tipped off by LJD about Millenicom. They resell cellular broadband from other service providers, including Verizon. They have several plans and service varies by region. Here in SE Michigan, I was able to get 3G service on Verizon's network through Millenicom. 60 bucks a month with a 20 GB monthly cap. Verizon sells the same service for the same price but with a 5 GB cap. They don't seem to offer that plan any longer; their current plans are 70 or 80 $/month. I have been very happy with my service. The Verizon 3G service seems to be a bit slower than AT&T but the connection is more reliable.

That's what I'm currently running and it's up most of the time. Plenty fast. But I do have to pay about $150 a month to get the 25 Gigs a month allowance. Seems with almost every site you visit having rolling videos you can't get away from them and they eat up bandwidth.

Only option for me is satelite internet.
Can't watch video,..not enough data, only 250 MB/day,..1/2 hour video and my bites for the day are used up.
