Canola questions

I was pondering using Canola as a cover crop to add to the rotation since it doesn't share very many disease with other row crops.

Does a variety exist without a patent? I desire one that can be saved and replanted if I so desire.

Any suggestions on where to buy?

Not sure if the "clearfield" varieties have a agreement that requires that you don't replant or not, but both RR and Liberty branded varieties do have that type of clause in the contract.

Best bet would be to find an open pollinated variety from an organic seed supplier, it will be expensive, but there shouldn't be any problem saving your seed from it.

Friend did canola in eastern Washington- he found you had to swath it before combining, not direct cut- if you waited until it was dry enough to combine directly, many seed pods shattered and much of the crop was lost.
