A capacitor tester will test it,,,,,give you its rating,,,,,,,check for leakage etc.

A simple low voltage analog ohm meter using the "kickback test" can give you an idea if its BAD such as its open or its shorted but it dont necessarily show if its good or its rating or leakage ONLY if its definitely bad.

For no more then the cost many gents just try a new one HOWEVER Ive seen plenty new out of the box that were still bad.

If its open or weak she can still produce a spark but not as strong. Likewise, if its weak or open the points will burn up prematurely. If its shorted THERES NO SPARK

Im in a hurry but if I missed anything hopefully the other gents will add to this..

Lacking access to a capacitor tester, you can make a basic test with an Ohmmeter. The link below explains how.

Trouble is, that doesn"t check capacitance value, or breakdown voltage, so to it only a partial test. If the condenser passes, it MAY be good, if it fails the basic test, it is, for sure, BAD.

If you are having trouble with an ignition circuit, this link to FOS-20 MAY be of help...
