Of Monarchs and wolly bears....

Was finishing up loading a load of hay on the wagon a couple days back, looked down and here was this LITTLE wooly bear catepillar. Tossed him overboard, told him to grow up... Which reminded me, I haven't seen hardly ANY of them this summer - last summer lots of them.

Then I got to thinking, I didn't see hardly any MONARCH butterfliers this season. Usually find a number of them when I'm cutting hay, especially where the milkweeds grow.

Yes, I know, Monarchs and Wooly Bears aren't the same species, but interesting that I've haven't seen many of either this season.

Don"t know where you are but here in central Virginia we"re practically up to our armpits in monarch this year. Frogs are doing very well too. On the other hand, I"ve seen almost no carpenter bees and only 1 box turtle.

All the carpenter bees came to Kentucky for summer camp. That noise you hear is barns collapsing.

But, few monarchs and fewer woolys.
Tons of yellow suphurs.

And chiggers, wow have we got chiggers in the woods.

I haven't seen as many monarchs either and very few fritillaries. Swallowtails seem to be doing okay. I plan to save a large patch of milkweed at the end of one of my food plots. Ground is very light and corn didn't do well. I have seen a lot of toads at all ages.

I walked my food plot corn today. I don't use RR and I only cultivate. There's crab grass and lambs quarter and grasshoppers and other insects. Easy to see why we don't have pheasants. Too much herbicide and insecticide. Not an indictment just observation.

I"m in the Mississippi River valley, of Western
Wisconsin, and have hardly seen a Monarch this
summer. There was a PBS special, that said that
the sanctuary areas in Mexico, where millions
overwinter, were hit hard by gyppo, illegal
loggers, cutting the huge pines. Their police
are to pre-occupied with other crimes, to notice
a few trees being cut and sold to feed hungry
families.
