First Day of High School

In a few minutes I am going to wake our son up for his first day of High school. He is so excited he had trouble getting to sleep last night. He is 6ft. 2in. tall, weighs 200lbs, smart, and handsome. He has been practicing with the school band most of the summer and has made friends and knows his way around campus.
Typically I want better for him than I had. My first day was the first attempt at desegregation. I ended up going to 4 different High Schools Before I graduated. Lots of things that happened during those years, You would not believe if I told you. Generally when people start reminiscing about how much fun they had in HS it makes me very angry. I had to restrain myself at the orientation meeting the other night when the principle talked about this being the best years of their lives. Anyway it's not about me it's about him and I'm sure he will do fine. Here is a picture. I told you he was handsome.

All the best to him. Hope he can enjoy it.
There was no desegregation here in rural central NY to deal with. But by the time high school was over for me (Jun 73) I had had all I could stand. Administration was convinced I needed to head off to a lengthy college stay. They had certainly ruined that idea for me! The more they pushed, the more I pushed back.
Glad to hear he's involved with music. That's something that he can be involved with one way or another the rest of his life.

Its my oldest sons first day of college, well tech school! Gonna be a machinist! He'll have projects to do, and old Dad has a few for him!! His senior project in high school machine shop was to show how "machine work" affects every day life. He made a cutway of a Briggs engine we had laying around, and I set him up with a small variable speed drive and motor to make it move. Got an A on it!!!

Keep him in that Band! It's nice to have friends. It's better to have friends that you work with to create and produce with! Most of those kids who play in Band learn how to work with others, while still working on their own. They go on to be successful at their life's work. Band is a great opportunity!

I still love my H!

I didn't look at high school as fun at all; it was just the means to go on to college. I drove myself 10 miles on basically dirt roads in all kinds of weather to get to high school. Had to do chores before I left and had to do chores or go to the field after school, so I left school right after the last bell every day.

I hope that your son understands that high school is necessary to go on to college and acts accordingly.

Good luck on his, and your, 4 years of high school.

Staying in the band is a great idea. Music can relax while it still exercises the brain.

I enjoyed high school, an all boys boarding school. I did band, track, Polish and English choir, yearbook and more. I never regretted any of it. I took most of the hardest classes I could.

You make your own successes in life

My kid came home yesterday from his first day of school and one of the new teachers had a form for me to sign. The form had several quotes from external_link on it. It's going to be an interesting year....

Good to see a nice clean-cut young person. I agree with you on the desegregation years being tough.. I spent a lot of time in the principal's office, for just standing up for myself. Very few fond memories. I think things are a lot better now.

RBnSC,
Congrats on a fine son. Enjoy him... four years will fly by so fast! (Our youngest is in 8th grade this year - seems like she was just a baby yesterday.)

I enjoyed high school, didn't have to walk that mile and a quarter to grade school like my two sisters and brother had to. Nice looking lad.

GREAT! Mine is starting his second year. Also plays in the band. Also over 6 ft and 200 lbs.
Hope he has a great year and can make it a fun time despite all the book work.

I had some fun in high school, but also found that it was hard work and tough to get the good grades my parents expected me to get. And I always had a lot of chores and jobs, morning and night on the farm, every day.

I enjoyed the band and chorus a lot in high school. What does your son play? That is something he can enjoy for the rest of his life, if he wants to.

If he is already 6 feet 2 and 200lbs, I would guess that the football coach and basketball coach will take an interest in your son. It will be interesting to see how large he becomes over the next few years. Athletics is not for everyone, just because they are big, but being a successful athlete in high school opens some doors for a person socially. I was always a little guy until I was a senior, and I envied the guys who got their growth earlier than I did...my football coach saw me 10 years after I graduated, 2 inches taller and 100 pounds heavier. He asked me where all that size was when HE needed it? Size matters, and your son seems to have been given a good measure of it. I sincerely hope your son will be interested in athletics. If not, that"s OK too.

I found that going away to college was a whole lot easier and more fun than high school had been. I didn"t have all that farm work to do every day, and I found the classes I took were much easier than the ones I had in high school. I was able to get very good grades and also had a great social life. I probably spent more money than I should have partying, but I never missed a class because of it. College, not high school was the most fun, carefree time of my life.

Good luck to your son! I hope he enjoys high school and whatever paths he chooses to take on that journey. Enjoy this time, as it passes so very quickly--it will amaze you how soon it will be until he graduates!

Thanks Guys, he had a great day. Only glitch is he has been put in regular geometry instead of honors geometry. I will head to the office this morning to try and straighten that out.
