cracked block

Trying to get my 31 chevy running .water leaks out behind manifold from waterjacket,,,no pressure.Could I just buff the block clean & apply JB weld or epoxy putty? Won"t be driving it much if at all & don"t want to put a different motor in it.Thanks

In simple terms yes.
I would get it to bare metal, then use rough silicon carbide cloth 60 grit open coat to assure a "stickable" finish on the metal. I would use a 1/16" thickness layer of epoxy, then put fiberglass mesh on that and embed it so the epoxy fills the mesh with no air bubbles. Then let it harden till the epoxy begins to set and put a final layer on. Use a square of garbage bag plastic as a cover on it so you can smooth it out to the edges from the center. once it is hard (2hrs or so if warm, read the directions) the plastic film will come off easily.
Epoxy and metal have a different expansion ratio in heat/cool cycles, so do not assume it is permanent. A metal plate covering the crack and screwed into the block at 3/4" intervals with a neoprene gasket under it is permanent but requires removal of the manifold.
Stitching with overlapping tapered thread plugs is great (google metal stitching)
Welding is probably the best but will require reconstructing the engine. Jim

I bought a used go to work car real cheap many years ago that had a crack like that covered with thick pink bondo. Never leaked a drop as long as I drove it. Best hundred bucks I ever spent.

My IH454 has a JB weld repair on the block that was repaired by the previous owner who was a mechanic and it's never leaked since I bought it in 95. I've baled, brushhogged and used it hard since then and I don't even think about it anymore. Temp usually runs about 180 during hard use with a pressure cap of 6-8 lbs.

I have a 91 r. old friend that has a sweet running 28 4cyl on a stand .He wants $1000 for it. & 2 trans one 4 speed one 3 speed.

Charles,I will be in Cottonwood(will go right thru Elmdale) next weekend.I will bring you some Conklin 'Dike',the best stopleak ever invented. 50+ years ago Uncle Fred (Spinden) froze and cracked an M.he smeared some kind epoxy over the crack. That tractor is still running.Hope to see you!Steve
