Best time to plant alfalfa in Indiana?

A friend planted an acre of alfalfa this spring for the deer. It was a wet spring, alfalfa came up and then died.

I've had the best luck planting grass just before it snows. Most lawn seed is a blend of 4-5 different seeds with annual rye as one of them. Is the same true for alfalfa, snow seed and blend in annual rye or a cover crop?
 
In N.Md., now is a good time to seed alfalfa. We also seed in the spring. I usually use about 12-15# of alfalfa seed and a bushel of oats for a cover in the fall. Fertility should be close to a 6.5 or better ph, and add nutrients and boron to test.
 
Probly germinated and then the ground became dry before a good root had developed. Planting in damp ground before a hot dry spell would not be a good idea. Here in the very North West corner of Ohio next to Indiana we have not had our normal August hot dry spell which should come in a coupla weeks. If we don't happen to get a real dry spell this year then anytime now would work. I like to plant when it is dry in August just before the fall rains start. I don't use a cover crop. I plant a strong 30 pounds per acre.
 
Best time here in central IL. is right now. Always works better for me in fall rather than spring. I always seed without cover crop.
