Ih 1066 leaking oil out of turbo

I have a 1974 IH 1066 what would cause it to leak oil out of the compressor side of the turbo between the housing and backplate?

You're not "putzing" around with it are you?

They like to run wide open, balls to the wall, loaded.

They'll slobber like that if used lightly.

If you have oil leaking out the compressor side and getting into the intake , then the seal in the hair dryer is going out along with the bearing . Age along with improper cool down of the engine and also not changing the air filter lead to this failure . If you have slobber on the exhaust side then this is due to injector or a ring problem .

There's no slobber on exhaust side. Can I buy new bearings and seals for it or would I be better off just putting a nee turbo on it?

Whatever you do, you might want to do it soon.

Oil leaking into the intake side can cause a runaway engine if it gets bad enough. Happened to my uncle's wheel loader. It just kept going until the engine pumped all its own oil up into the intake... You can guess what the end result was.

Allen if your 400 series engine is slobbering then you need to look into WHY as if the injectors are good and your sleeves and rings are good then THEY DO NOT slobber under light loads , oh and one more thing check your thermostat to make sure the engine is getting warm enough as if it is NOT then you are not burning the fuel and this will also cause some problems along with washing the walls and cause undue ware to the sleeves and slobbering from the hot side .

You can buy replacement center sections and you simply change out the housings... although that may not be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new turbo. Price it out and see...

As to the original question... I'd say the bearing is probably getting bad and thus the seal leaks. Get it done now before it gets bad enough that it starts pulling oil into the intake and she runs off on the oil...
