I've got problems...

I've noticed a small leak under the joining area of my Farmall C. I'm assuming it is from the main seal. I'm guessing that it's not normal. Is there anyone in the Central Indiana area that splits tractors?

There is also a popping sound in every gear. What could cause that?

Lastly, I put a brand new temp gauge on it but it doesn't work. When I take the sensor out, it has fluid on it but it won't register anything. Did I get a faulty sensor or what do I do to fix it?

Thanks!

I am assuming you mean oil leak...yes it could be your rear main seal or ot could be your trans input bearing at the bac of the drive shaft...either way it"s a split, almost any tractor repair place can/will do that, but it sure is not a hard thing to do yourself! I would also reccomend that ya do what needs to be done as far as new clutch and rotating or replacing your ring gear while you are in there!
Need more specifics on the popping noise in the tranny....is it coming from the tranny, or is the motor popping?
As far as your temp guagem take the sensor end out, hild a flame under it and see if the needle moves, you may simply just not be running the tractor enought to get things warm.

Small leak, I wouldn't worry about it.

With the temp sensor, after running for awhile, the radiator bubbles and you hear the fluid move and settle and all that so I would like to think I'm running it to a point where it gets hot enough to register.

The popping is not from the engine itself. You can feel it in your feet while driving. I'm not sure what would cause that to happen. Any suggestions?

Tim sounds like ya mighta got a bad guage, like I said, try a flame under the sensor see if the needle moves.
As far as the tranny, I really would have to hear more, the only thing Ican tell you is that if it's in every gear, maybe you need to think broken ring/pinion tooth? Pete

I wish I could tell you more about the popping but it just started the other day and I haven't had a chance to really figure it out. A broken tooth would definitely make sense to me though.

I was afraid about a bad gauge but I will definitely try the flame test and go from there.

Thanks for your help Pete!

Your block is plugged at the bottom where the coolant goes down by the sleeves which will make a noise as the coolant isnt just flowing like its supposed to. By removing the radiator and lower housing you can use compressed air and water to get that junk out. You could also leave the lower housing on and make something to seal the hole so a garden hose would force back pressure and the junk could go out the top of the block. A temp guage in the lower housing will not read very good as the system when it works just done get hot enough to register on the guage. Now if you had shutters you could stop air flow enough to get the guage to register. The sensor will work better in the top of the head or in the inlet from the radiator. Some of the inlets had a place for the sensor.

You have no waterpump on that tractor, thermosyphen only and I know on the Deeres that were that way it was hard to get them filled with water and would leave an air pocket where the guage is at and they would not read anything as they need to be in the liquid to work, not air. And mix your antifreeze and water before you put in radiator as putting the antifreeze in and then finnishing filling with water it will not circulate as should. You might try filling the radiator with the guage sender out and as the liquid is running out install the sender.

First of all to check your temp. gage sensor put the sensor in a pot of water and heat I to just above boiling by stages and using a cooking thermometer to check the readings on the gage. Second before you get too excited about the popping in the rear end CHECK ALL WHEEL BOLTS AND WHEEL WEIGHTS for loose bolts and/or wedges. If it is popping in every gear as you say loose wheels and/or weights would be common to every gear. Please post back with your results of these tests. Armand

I grew up on a C, and the nly time the temp guage would come up at all was if it got to hot. The sensor is at the coldest part of the system, and it does not get hot there under normal conditions.
If it cdoes not show above the cold reading, the system is working.

I tightened all of the wheel bolts the other day but the popping still occurs. The bolts around the hub haven"t been touched in over 30 years. They didn"t seem loose at the time but I will have to check again
